It isn’t that love usually conquers all or that virtue will triumph in the end. It’s merely that certain trite and true symbols are getting to be as familiar as Hitler breaking treaties. -
For instance, to indicate the

following conditions, the means is
PASSING OF TIME—1. Revolving hands on a clock. 2. Closeup of
a ‘calendar with the pages fluttering. 3. A pastoral scene which

‘bud to lush maturity to seared ‘leaf to a Heavy snow.
- TRAVEL (this is easy)—1. Re-
volving drivers. of a train. 2. A
~ boat’s prow cutting the waves.
3. If in an elevator, merely shutting and opening the doors will suffice. LOCALE—Paris, Eiffel Tower. London, the Big Ben clock. New York, Statue of Liberty, and perhaps Broadway lights. Hollywood, studio gates. : 2
” " Scoops and Flashes IF A DIRECTOR wishes to save his studio a little money and avaid perhaps some unnecessary action in his picture, he has only to resort to newspaper montages. Recent specimens of this device are seen in “Penny Serenade,” “Affectionately Yours” and “Citizen Kane.” In “Kiss the Boys Goodbye,” Don Ameche and Oscar Levant’s tour of the South in search of a singer is recorded by a succession of newspaper flashes from the
various cities covered. Very quick,
inexpensive and easy, you see. For death and the dead, there are a number of tricks available: 1. Off-screen voices. 2. Transparent shadow figures. 3. A tombstone or wreath. 4. In “Citizen Kane,” a suddenly darkened window. 5. Stopping the loud tick of a grandfather’s clock or turning off a dripping faucet. And then there are these cliches: - ATTEMPTED SUICIDE—A

zen Kane,” a medicine bottle and a spoon shown immedijately after a climatic scene. BLINDNESS—Filming the objects in a room out of focus.

A PARTY—An ‘ash ty full of cigaret butts:and an empty bottle—and perhaps a battered hat. GANGSTER — Upturned overcoat collar and downturned hat brim. SUSPENSE—Creaking - doors. Currently bothering the Hollywood boys, however; 1 the matter of “blessed events.” Tiny garments suddenly in the heroine’s hands don’t seem to suffice very well any more. French directors devised the tactful procedure of having the mother-to-be faint, with: nobody else fainting for any other reason. And Hollywood stole the idea for Priscilla Lane in “Four Mothers.” » ” »
An Argument For—
PERHAPS it would appear then that Hollywood is just in a rut. But on this point, Director Mitchell Leisen has this to say: “Motion picture cliches have been developed as a sort of shorthand of dramatic action. And if they ‘aren’t fairly obvious there. is a danger too many people will fail to understand what we are getting at. “Show me a better way to tell in one shot about an accumulation 'of fortune than by piling up * coins in front of the camera. Let them melt away and the reverse is portrayed. It would take pages of dialog covering many changes of scene to act out the same thing. “I don’t believe most people object to what has become familiar to them in motion pictures by repetition if there is good and sufficient reason for the repetition. I think the contrary is true. They like to see the same things over and over again.” Maybe so. After all, Clark Gable has been doing pretty much the same thing for 10 years—and he’s doing all right.

admirable charities. As the star of Bizet’s “Carmen” she was nearly everything Bizet could have wished for in a leading lady. Besides her beauty she has a voice and the ability to act—all too rare in operatic fields. Her rich, full, throaty soprano began to blossom in the Habanera and reached its peak in the Sequedille, The audience continually reserved its greatest plaudits for this veritable “opera baby” as she gave to her role just the right touch of coquetishness and zest. Again as on the previous night

self about the all too small stage with a gay abandon in its bright costumes during the opera itself and as part of the prelude concert to charm the nearly 2000 spectators. While the ladies of the ballet and Miss Joffre were the audience favorites, several of the men singers gave quite commendable performances. Milo Luka, who won an encore (“Those Gold Dreams of Long Ago”) for his singing during the prelude concert of what is commonly known - as. . “Figaro,” also made Escamillo, the toreador, a substantial characterization with a splendidly virile voice. Particularly in the Toreador Song. Enrico Clausi, too, having won the first-night audience at the “Bohemian Girl” presentation, repeated his success in his duets with Miss Joffre, with Grace Lillyholm in her portrayal of Michaela, the peasant
