Reports ‘Hoosiers Are Still Strongly Isolationist on Return to Capital.

Times Special WASHINGTON, July 10.—Senator . Raymond E. Willis (R. Ind.) returned here from Indiana today and promptly turned thumbs down on Wendell L. Willkie’s proposal to

establish U. S. Naval bases in Ire-|

land. “Hoosiers still are 4 to 1 isolationist and do not want any shooting part in this war,” Senator Willis reported. “Of course I do not think we need to worry about the Willkie proposal, for bases in Ireland. The Irish are well able to see to that. Moving into Iceland may be a logical part of President Roosevelt's program, but in my opinion it just takes us another step closer to the shooting stage.” While they do hot like war, the Indiana citizenry does like defense industry and many appeals were addressed to him from various communities seeking defense plants, the Senator said. Terre Haute and Sullivan County are particularly anxious for them and he expects that plants for these places may be forthcoming soon.

“But Indiana and the country generally are not ready for war,” Senator: Willis concluded. “Should President Roosevelt put a declaration of war proposal up to Congress I am sure that it would be voted down. Of course if it carried, I would do all I could to make it successful.” 3 Rep. Joseph W. Martin Jr, Republican National Committeeman, went to Indianapolis to seek campaign funds and promised a G. O. P. Congressional victory next year if they are forthcoming, Senator Willis said. Sees Decision Unpopular He predicted that the people of Indiana will be aroused over the Indiana Supreme Court’s decision against G. O. P. reorganization of the State Government “because they feel that their victory at the polls was frustrated.” State Chairman Arch N. Bobbitt remains safe at his post “at least until the next state committee organization election,” the _Senator

Baruch - May Become Administrator in Charge of U. S. Defense.

WASHINGTON, July 10 (U. P.).— Congressional agitation for placing control of the defense program under a single administrator coincided today with Senatorial praise of Bernard M. Baruch, who has been suggested for such a post. Senate Republican Leader Charles L. McNary of Oregon, said that Mr. Baruch, who headed the World War Industries Board, 1s “a tower of strength to the nation and deserving of every confidence we can place in him.” Mr. McNary made the statement after conferring with Wendell L. Willkie, his running-mate on the G. O. P. ticket in the 1940 Presiden; tial campaign, who [rw had urged unification of the defense program under a single head. ' The Senator did not advocate the selection of Mr, Baruch as coordinator of defense, and confined his statement to praise of Mr. Baruth’s abilities. Congressional agitation for consolidation of the defense setup has led to the introduction of numerous legislative proposals for changes. A House investigating committee recently issued a report criticizing the defense setup and blaming the lack

of co-ordination for production lags.

Several other Senators praised the abilitiés of the 70-year-old Baruch without committing themselves to his selection as defense head. Senator Tom Connally (D. Tex.) said the New York financier did a “great job” during the World War and is “entitled to the respect of his countrymen.” During the last year, several Congressmen said, New Deal officials charged with responsibility for national defense have been visiting Mr. Baruch frequently. Among them have been Leon Henderson, price control administrator, and Thomas
