GALLUP SCANS PAPERS’ POLLS

Tribune Find Higher Percentage of War Favor.

NEW YORK, July 10.—Two postcard polls on the subject of American entrance into war—one in Illinois and one in New York—are currently revealing a surprisingly high vote for American entrance into the war—higher than any studies which the Institue has conducted in those states every month for 23 months of war. The New York “Daily News” poll results to Monday were showing a vote of 31.8 per cent in New York

indications are that the final figure ‘for. the “News” oll will probably be in the neighborhood of 25 to 30 per cent for war. The Institute’s ~latest survey in New York State, conducted by the interviewing method, shows a vote of 21 per cent for entering the war now—or considerably lower than the “Daily News” poll.

21.5 Per Cent in Chicago

In Illinois, the Chicago “Tribune” was showing 21.5, per cent for war in its return up to Monday from Cook County (Chicago). Returns from other parts of the state: had not yet started to come in, The Institute's figure for the state of Illinois in its survey conducted by the interviewing method is 18 per cent in favor of entering the war at the present time, Every student of public opinion knows that postcard polls are seldom answered by more than 40 per cent of the people who receive them.

Should these two newspapers conduct.a survey by the postcard method on the issue of convoys, using.a neutrally “worded question, the indications are that the per cent in favor of convoys would run between 55 and" 65 ver cent for New York and 45 and 55 per cent for Illinois.

SEALED POWER CORP. "PLANT STILL IDLE

The National Defense Mediation Board - today renewed: its attempt to. settle the dispute which has halted work on submarine and tank parts at the Sealed Power Corp. plant at Muskegon Heights, Mich. United Automobile Workers (A. F. of L.) threw the dispute back to ihe board by rejecting its settlement proposal ‘and ignoring a request of A. F. of L. officials that strike action be delayed. Approximately 2500 workers were .made idle when the strike was called Tuesday. A strike of 150 C. I. O. steel workers at Saginaw, Mich., stopped production on defense orders totaling $500,000 at the Wicker Bros. Boiler Works. No defense production was affected by the closing of Detroit Chrysler plants because “of an upholstery shortage. The shortage, caused by a strike of United Automobile Workers (C. I. 0.) at the National Automobile Fibers, Inc. factory, forced 12,500 Chrysler employees to stop work yesterday and threatened ' to result in additional shutdowns today.
