BEAVERBROOK’S

CRITICS ATTACK

Charge U. S.-Built Planes Are Unpacked, British Output Is ‘Chaos.’

LONDON, July 9 (U. P.)—The House of Commons heard charges today that hundreds of Americanmade planes lay unpacked in warehouses because the “necessary auxiliary equipment” had not been ordered, and that “chaos fro mtop to bottom” exists in British airplane production. Lord Beaverbrook, member of the War Cabinet and former Airplane Production Minister, was criticized vigorously for alleged fumbling of plane production which one critic said had been handled like “a newspaper stunt” for the last year. (Lord Beaverbook is a newspaper publisher.)

control” to consolidate purchases by the Ministries of Aircraft Production, Supply and the Admiralty.

Sharp criticism of the Government’s war production program, notably in tanks and airplanes, was voiced in Commons by Garro-Jones, Leiut. Comm. Austin Hopkinson, Independent, and Lieut. Rupert A. Brabner, Conservative. Hopkinson, who said he was speaking as “a member of the Fleet Air Arm and as an egircraft producer,” made the charge that there was “chaos from top to bottom” in British plane production.

Speaks in Uniform

Brabner, wearing the uniform of the Fleet Air Arm with which he saw action in Crete, said, “In Greece, Crete, Lybia. and Syria there has been an almost chronic lack of the most important materials of war.” The British did not have enough planes to send up more than two at a time for continuous patrol during daylight over Malemi in Crete,

FORM NON-DEFENSE SAVING COMMITTEE

PROVIDENCE, R. I, July 9 (U. P. —President Henry M. Wriston of Brown University announced today formation of a National Citizens Emergency Committee of Non-De-fense Expenditures to brake non-es-sential and non-defense spending by the Government. Officers appointed to the committee, which includes prominent economists, tax experts, college presidents and civic leaders, were Secretary Guy E. Snavely, executive director of the Association of American Colleges, and Treasurer Milton W. Harrison, trustee of the Bowery Savings Bank, New York City. President Wriston is chairman. The group, which will pay its own expenses, plans to maintain a research staff in Washington to study every appropriation bill and make specific recommendations whenever they consider an expenditure unnecessary.

many from acquiring “jumping off the United States. Anglo-United States naval cooperation in the U-boat infested waters. between the United States and Iceland, he hinted, would protect both American supplies destined for forces in the island and British convoys bound for England. Churchill announced at the same time that the British forces at Iceland, estimated to number 80,000 men, would be retained there to cooperate closely with the United States forces stationed on the island. : Churchil] pointed out that United States forces at Iceland would require provisioning and reinforcing from time to time. “These consignments of American supplies for the American forces on duty overseas for the purposes of the United States will of course, have to traverse the most dangerous waters and as we have a very large traffic constantly passing through, these waters it may, I dare say, be found mutually advantageous in practice that the two navies involved should assist each other as far as convenient in that part of the waters,” he said. Emphasizing that United States occupation of Iceland was one of the most important events of the war, Mr. Churchill said it was carried out “in pursuance of the

ing the western hemisphere from the Nazi menace.” “Seizure of Iceland by Hitler would have been of the greatest advantage to him in bringing pressure to bear on the United States and Britain,” he added. “It has been undertaken by the United States in pursyance of purely American policy for the protection of the Western Hemisphere from the Nazi menace. “I understand it is the view of American technical authorities that modern conditions of war, especially air warfare, require forestalling action, which in this case, was especially in order to prevent acquisition by Hitler of a jumping off ground from which it would be possible, bound by bound, to come to close quarters with the American continent. The declared policy of the United States is in complete harmony with British interests, he said, announcing: “We will propose to retain our Army in Iceland and as British and United States forces will both have the same object in view, namely defense of Iceland, it seems likeliest they will co-operate closely and effectively in the resistance of any attempt by Hitler to gain a foothold.” Churchill said it “obviously would be foolish for the United States to have one plan’ for defending Iceland and for the British forces to have another.”

CHICAGO, July 9 (U. P.).—Joe Louis’ attorney filed an answer in Circuit Court today asking dismiss sal for want of equity of the divorce suit brought against. the heavyweight champion by his wife, Marva, and denying that Mrs. Louis treated her husband “kindly as a true and virtuous wife.” Louis’ answer, filed by Attorney William H. Temple, denied the acts of “extreme and repeated cruelty” alleged in Mrs, Louis’ petition and asserted that statements of the champion’s property and income contained in his wife’s suit were erroneous. Temple said that Louis’ answer to the suit left three possibilities regarding its outcome: A reconciliation, which Mrs. Louis has indicated she would not oppose; a bitterly contested court fight, or an out of court settlement on property.
