Jomemaking— : py Worrying Wives; How to : Streamline Papa Painlessly

WHEN THE HEAD of her home begins to grouse a little about his

waistline and his extra chin, then wife to resolve .to take immediate “little weight. No matter how polite

and there’s the time for the smart steps to encourage him to lose a

she is ordinarily, when he complains that

his collars are too tight and that his belts will have to have extra holes punched in them, she does not counter with, “But, darling, you

don’t really need to lose weight.” If "he does need to lose a few “inches around his’ middle and is saying so himself, why in the world should ‘she insist that he doesn’t? No wife needs to be told just how to agree with her husband about _any fault without hurting his vanity. It can be done. In fact, on . subjects of reducing it’s being done every day in hundreds of American “homes. ~ Furthermore, in hundreds of other homes, the matter of overweight ‘ “husbands is being taken under advisement at the instigation of wives rather than husbands. Many a woman is saying to herself, “If I stay slim and my husband does, too, we'll be a right smart looking, active couple at fifty. But if he gets fat, we won’t be so very energetic or so * very dashing looking at fifty, even if T do stay slim.” » ”n »

. NOT ONLY from a standpoint. of appearance, but from a - standpoint of health and general well-being, most medical authorities agree with beauty-minded wives that it’s not a good idea for any person to gain many pounds per year from the age of 30 upward. > (Men will please stop reading this column at this point. From now on it’s a letter to wives from a wife. In other words, it’s just among us

girls.) It’s true that there are ways—sev-~ eral ways—to slim down a husband’s figure a little without ever making an issue of his proportions, kidding him about having a “bay window” or, in fact, letting him know that he is being reduced. It will take longer to go about the _job subtly than it would if he were actively co-operating, but it can be done. In the first place, there’s the matter of planning menus. Give him a beautiful-to-gaze-at, cool, fresh fruit salad—with huge chunks of fruit piled on crisp lettuce—instead of thick, creamy soup at the beginning of a meal. : #2 5 8 DON’T HAVE a rich dessert more than twice a week, even if you have to resort to “I didn’t have time to make a pie, dear” excuses. Be a , little stingy about keeping the cookie jar well stocked. Replace " the candy dish on the coffee table with a bowl of oranges and apples. Insist that you don’t want a sundae after the movie, adding that you'd rather go home and whip up a nice tall lemonade. : Then don’t be too generous with the sugar in the lemonade. See that the majority of the meals you serve include more of his favorite fresh vegetables and green salads than rich gravies, starchy and sweet foods. In addition, encourage your husband to play golf or swim or row or renew his interest in some not-too-, - strenuous sport. Plan week-end picnics and swimming parties rather than week-end bridge or cocktail parties. . Perhaps the two of you might - take golf or riding lessons. The very least you could do would be to establish facilities for croquet or badminton in the backyard. And you always can suggest taking long walks instead of long drives in the car on Sunday afternoons or walking rather than driving two blocks to call on a neighbor. With less fattening foods on the a moderate . amount of exercise, both of you are sure to look slimmer and ‘feel better. . ” # ”

The Question Box

Q—Is it ever correct to take soup from the end of the spoon? A—If the soup is so full of vegetables as to constitute almost solid food, it may be eaten from the end of the spoon, but only & small guantity should be taken into the spoon at a time.

. Q—Please tell me how to remove the tarnish from silver. A—One of the best ways is by electrolysis. Fill an enameled or agate kettle partly full of water in which one teaspoon of either washing or baking soda and one teaspoon of salt to each quart of water have been dissolved. Heat this solution to the boiling point; put in strips of aluminum or bright zinc; add the tarnished silver and boil it. The silver must be completely covered with the solution and each piece must be in contact with the aluminum or zine, either directly or through other silver. When the tarnish has disappeared, the silver should be removed from the kettle, Washed and dried with a clean, soft clo >

For a Vacation Wardrobe

THE INDIANAPOLIS TIMES

DEAR JANE JORDAN-I am a woman of 33 years. M husband is 43 and we have been married 14 years. My problem is not that of another woman, My husband respects and cares for me in his way, but to him marriage only means a place to call home and the companionship of a wife. He did not want children, but we have two, and since they are here he loves them dearly and is a fairly good father although there are lots of things about raising children that we do not see alike. We have never been happy as I always felt

and still feel a married couple should be. To me love and marriage should be the most important things in life but ours has been more

How Can Spattering Be ‘Avoided?

There’s no need for a spattered oven or a scorched surface of the steak if you follow the right method of broiling. That important rule, “A low temperature for cooking meat,” holds good for broiling as well as roasting. » So the solution to your problem is to place the steak far enough from the source of the heat so that the meat cooks slowly half way through while surface is nicely

inches. No spattered oven, so to clean! No smoky kitchen! it’s easy on the cook, too, for doesn’t have to stand over the si turning it often. When one side of the steak done, season it with salt and pep per, turn it and brown the se ond side and the steak is ready serve. - This method is also used broiling chops and patties.

market stylist, recommends the type Parrish. It is crush-resistant, with a skirt that is straight, but full enough for walking, and a comfortable jacket with a little-boy collar. It comes in a soft, deep blue—and with it Helen Parrish wears a widebrimmed felt hat in matching blue. The topcoat for this vacation wardrobe is natural camel's hair. For a California vacation that will include trips hither and yon, you'll need things to wear that are a little dressy. For this, Jane Taylor suggests a favored shirtmaker of red and white seersucker with a crisp white pique trim—perfect for a terrace lunch at Santa Barbara —and a beige rayon crepe with, short sleeves, a flared skirt, giddy button trim which would be very much at ease at Lake Arrowhead or Del Monte. ” ” ”

WITH THE EXCEPTION of a swimsuit in a brown and white Hawaiian print, with an elastic waist, the rest of a vacation wardrobe, chosen by Helen Parrish, is concerned with playclothes. They're all the swap-around Kind, too, that make it look as if you had four trunks in your hotel room-—— not one measly little suitcase. Two slack suits: First, the strictly tailored type, heavy enough for warmth on cool evenings. Handstitching peps up the mannish collar, outlines the huge patch pockets, and you can have it in black, red or sand. Add a couple of slip-ons, and an extra blouse or two to change off with your suit blouses, and you've several slack costumes. The second siack suit in a tripleduty blue denim. The trousers are plain, but the finger-tip jacket is trimmed with the same red floral bandana print of the open-collared blouse. And a skirt comes, too, also in faded blue denim with the tiniest touch of red print edging the pockets. Also add the well-tailored shorts that complete this changeabout outfit. Gas Stoves Feature New Improvements

New gas ranges are so scientifically designed that failure in cooking due to uncertain stove performance is practically impossible. Improvements important to cooking efficiency featured by one manufacturer are visual time and temperature guides, glass oven. door with interior oven light so that at a glance the housewife can see if food is baking to her satisfaction, and wide working space directly over the oven dividing the four top burners. Liberal storage spaces for pans and pot lids are under and on each side of the oven.

Laundry Kit Saves Silk Stockings

Keeping the original beauty of fine silk hose through daily wear and daily laundering is an important problem for the modern girl. A New York beauty shop has introduced special laundering equipment for this purpose. The unit consists of a stocking form for drying (this comes in stocking sizes), a special soap, & tube of silk finish and a glass washer. These preparations are said to preserve color, elasticity and wear-

of a business partnership. A short time after our but I do not approve of divorces if it | and I liked having my own home; so I kept hoping things wduld straighten out. Consequently I am very unhappy but always have acted the part of a happy wife. We have lots of friends and get along quite well socially but things are not as they should be. My children do make up for what I feel I've missed in life, yet I feel that my unhappiness may have its effect upon them. If what I need is a good “telling,” I am sure I can take it. Can you help me to make our lives happier?—I. M. A. } : ' 8 =n 0»

Answer—No, I do not think you need a good “telling.” There are many women in your shoes who have failed to realize their dreams in marriage. Most of them simply make the best of it if they have children to consider. For one thing people expect too much of marriage. They have an incurable craving for romance and find it hard to accept a busi-

-ness-like partnership instead. Where the husband is at all affection~

ate they find it easier to give up their highly colored romantic dreams and settle down to prosaic day-by-day life. You have asked how to improve your marriage but since I do not know either of you it is difficult to say. I do not know what would please the man or bring forth more response from him than you receive. If you could put aside your disappointment long enough to- study his getting his attention. ; : After all you are fortunate in having a man: who respects and cares for you although he is more or less unaware of your emotional needs. You have no active misery to contend with such as drunkenness, infidelity or unemployment. Surely you can find compensations which will mitigate your .discontent. It is not well to depend on your children too much for such compensations. How about an activity outside your home to take up your energies and leave you less time for brooding over the fact that you do not have a model husband? Many times a success in some other field of endeavor takes up a person’s excess energies and leaves less

disposition you might discover ways and means of.

We, the Women— Be Thoughtful When Visiting Soldier Friend

By RUTH MILLETT : . MANY A GIRL will spend her vacation this year visiting some young man at a distant Army Camp

—in- the. hope of making a little|§

headway toward marriage. : The smart girl will remember don’ts: She'll let her young man know in advance when she plans to arrive. Surprises aren't always appreciated. She won't give other soldiers cause for saying, “Say, your girl sure! is crazy about you.” She will soft pedal that possessive, arm-clinging stuff in favor of a little more dignity. If she has any brains at all she won’t flirt with all her young man’s friends, though she will be friendly and charming to them. Certainly she won't make the mistake of letting any of them know that she already knows about the promotion her friend just received —for he is sure not to want them to know he wrote her a bragging letter.

IF SHE HAS a car with her, she’ll see that it is filled up with gas before she picks up her young man— Army pay being what it is. If her young man is a private she won’t go around talking about how handsome the officers look in their uniforms. It would be like his telling her how gorgeous Doris Duke looks in her diamonds. She’ll be smart enough, of course, not to over-stay her welcome, but to leave while her young man is still begging her to stay on. a
