Board reported today. The decrease from April to May is accounted for by a decline in the amount of publicly financed construction. For the first five months of the year, the volume of residential con-. struction totaled $636,683,000, a gain of 19.5 per cent over the same period in 1940. The number of dwelling units built, including all types, increased from 152,152 to 175,750. Of the total of $636,683,000 valuation for homes built from January to May, $560,209,000 represented private construction and $76,474,000 was building financed by governmental units. Increases in home building were scored sin four of the 12 Federal Home Loan Bank districts in May over April, and in eight districts over May, 1940. The largest relative gain over April was reported by the Topeka Bank district, including Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and
| Oklahoma, with 16.6 per cent.
The greatest increase from May,
i 1940, figures, 41.5 per cent, was reg4 |istered in the Pittsburgh Bank dis-
trict, embracing Pennsylvania, West Next was
New England, where the rise was 31.9 per cent. The Board figures are based upon an analysis of building permits reported to the United States Department of Labor.
