JOE WILLIAMS SAYS—

NEW YORK, July 8.—The Ruthian days are gone but the potent mace is still the most vibrant turnstile

tonic in baseball.

Late last winter, Will Harridge, president of the

American League, who keeps precise tabs on such

things in his office, told us that Bob Feller was the only in-

dividual box office attraction left

ir the game. © “Whenever he appears the attendance goes up,” revealed Mr. Harridge. " “That isn’t: true of any other individual in the game.” Obviously these comments were made before Joe DiMaggio started his spectacular streak. For the _ time being at least the $37,500 outy fielder is the outstanding draw in baseball. The Yankees drew 220,860 paid admissions for the twelve games of their last home stay. The turnouts ranged from ‘8,692 to 44,000. It has been the same on the road. No crowd, even on week days, has dipped below the 8000. The sensational hitter will always be more imporfant at the gate than the best pitcher because ‘he’s in the game every day. Ty Cobb says there is no telling how great DiMag could be if he .. took the dreary matter of condi- . tion—off season condition—more ~ seriously. Joe is no Good Time Charley, but he isn’t enthusiastic about working on condition during the winter months. "This is the first season he’s been in every game going into July. He engaged in one of his usual salary

debates last winter and -the front

about condition, about working to

office told him sharply to get in shape so he could play a full year and then talk contract. This is a sensitive point with DiMaggio. He insists he is never far out of condition, even in the winter, and that a series of circumstances over which he had no control, kept him out of the lineup. Which is more or less true.

Just the same, DiMaggio hasn’t the Cobb or the Hornsby intensity

build up leg strength and energy, about taking the long range view as to his future. It may be that he doesn’t need to, havin so many natural gifts. . It does not seem an exaggeration, however, to suggest he is doing pretty fair in his own way.

Ott Checked by Braves' Field

BOSTON, July 3 (NEA).—Mel Ott has manufactured more than 400 home runs during his career, but the little Giant outfielder hasn't cracked the ball for the circuit at .the big playing area of the Braves .since 1938. Ott requires only four more doubles to

make it 400 for his lifetime. He has made fewer triples than any other variety of hits.

Asked what brand of gasoline they use “on tour,” midwest motorists reveal a strong preference for Red Crown. In fact, they choose Red Crown more than twice as often as any other brand. Even among those who sometimes use other brands in their home communities, many say, “When we're away from home we always get Red Crown gasoline.” Why? Because Standard Red Crown has earned a reputation for dependable, uniform high-quality wherever it is found and because midwest motorists feel “at hore wherever they see that famous “Standard

They Should Stop Joe by The Late Summer of 1948

By HARRY FERGUSON United Press Sports Editor NEW YORK, July 3.—In the late summer of 1948, when Joe DiMaggio’s batting streak is finally stopped at 1026 games, they still are going to be talking about yesterday afternoon when the Boston Sox turned themselves into a band of burglars in a vain attempt to rob the Yankee Clipper of his lo:

Land, Dick Ambler, Bob Hummer |8l0Iy

It was the day when DiMaggio hit safely in his 45th consecutive game and broke the record of Wee Willie Keeler who played back in the Spanish-American War days. I was a bright, sunny day—not at a. suitable for the commission of burglary—and there were 8682 witnesses to the crime that the Red Sox attempted to perpetrate. Manager Joe Cronin of the Red Sox had it figured this way: 1. If you pitch low to DiMaggio, he will get a hit. 2. If you pitch high and outside to him, he will get a hit. 3. If you (A) fast ball him, (B) slow ball him .or, (C) curve ball him, he will get a hit. Therefore, Cronin decided the only chance to stop DiMaggio was to rob him—to let him hit the ball and then make “burglar catches.” So when the game started the Red Son lined up under the following aliases: Jesse James—cf. Robin Hood—1b. Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son—If. Gerald Chapman—ss. The Thief of Bagdad—rf. Al Jennings—3b. Ali Baba’s 40 Thieves—2b. Jimmy Valentine—ec. John Dillinger—p.

DiMag, Williams | Battle For Slugging Honors 1

By PAUL SCHEFFELS United Press [Staff Correspondent

NEW YORK, July 3.—The hero of the hour, of course, is Outfielder Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees who set a new major league

batting record by hitting safely in his 45th consecutive game yesterday, but spare a thought for the deeds of another outfielder, Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox. DiMaggio today is the all-round batting star of the major leagues— that is, until you come to the batting averages and there, perched at the top, ahead of “Pal Joey,” is Williams with a league-leading mark of .401. Comparatively little attention has been paid Williams’ hitting achievements but if ever anybody is to crowd DiMaggio out of the American League batting picture, it will be this laconic, young left-handed slugger. The battle for the league

as the pennant fight. The Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 8-4 for their sixth straight win, ran their American League lead over the idle Cleveland Indians to three games and Williams added another

hit to his already impressive average

caught the ball, There was an argument in the press box about the nature of the crime, but the official scorer ruled it was grand larceny and not petty. The next time DiMaggio came to bat he tried to keep the ball away from right field by hitting a slash-

Red ing grounder over third base. Jim

(Al Jennings) Tabor did the dirty work this time, He dashed over, made a back-handed stop and whirled and threw DiMaggio out at first. It was the most outrageous robbery since Paris stole Helen and started the Trojan War. By this time DiMaggio was bored with this lawlessness and so was Manager - Joe McCarthy of the Yankees. By doing considerable thinking between the fourth and sixth innings they hit upon a method of restoring law and order. The idea was to belt the ball out of the park where the Boston bandits couldn’t touch it. DiMaggio went to bat in the sixth, took two balls and then hit a foul. On the next pitch, he blasted a home run into the lower left field stands. Heigh-ho, Silver, the bandits are fleeing in all directions!
