CROWD AIRPORT

TO SOAK BREEZE

Works Board Calls for An ~ Observation Platform to Add Income.

By RICHARD LEWIS

One of the best spots to escape . the summer’s héat is the Municipal _ Airport where nightly thousands of - Indianapolis people cool off. For years, the airport grounds, “with a perpetually westerly breeze . after sunset, has been becoming in- | creasingly popular. Now the crowds are so large that it is almost im-

possible to get a place near the rail

to watch the planes come in and to

. get the benefit of the breeze.

Works Board members today were

. considering one method of accom- . modating the crowds and at the

Drop Time Ordinance

. Sentiment in City Council now

appears to favor dropping the day-

light saving time ordinance in view of the success of establishing daylight time by the extra-legal but unassailable proclamation by Mayor Sullivan. Council members have been advised by City Corporation Counsel _ Edward H. Knight that if they go ead and pass the ordinance h has been pending since April, light saving time may be killed in Indianapolis. A group of councilmen have de- " cided to move at the next Council meeting for a vote to kill the pend-

. ing ordinance and thus keep day-

“light time by proclamation only.

190,592 Miles on Car No. 9

City Police ©ar No. § which never has been outside Indianapolis, has travelled a distance equivalent to

- seven and one-half times around

the world. (City Purchasing Agent Albert Losche believes that’s some kind of a record. The distance the car has travelled while in service during the past four years was added up by the City appraisal board when old No. 9 and five other cars were traded in on new models. The total mile-

.~ age on the six cars being traded

was just short of 1,000,000 miles. Car No. 9 travelled 190,592 miles , and the average for the six cars was 158,391 miles. Mr. Losche said that in his opinjon the cars were justified in hav‘ing a few squeaks. He said he

couldn’t imagine who would buy

them.

TOWN PREPARES FOR

§

ALL EMERGENGIES

GREENWICH, Conn, June 27 (U. P.) —At least one Connecticut town

‘ is prepared for any contingency up

to and including an aerial blitzkrieg. The Greenwich Town Board of Estimate and Taxation has approved a $3885 appropriation for the

purchase of 50 additional pistols; |

two transportable steel boats; 100

folding cots with mattresses, sheets, [|

pillows, and other equipment. Its emergency defense plan was worked out in co-operation with the Connecticut State Police. The pis-

tols would be handed out to members of fire-police patrols, or to . “any other group of special officers” in periods of serious emergency. The two 14-foot steel boats are complete with trailers that can be attached to automobiles so the boats could be speeded to any lake or ‘ pond in town where they might be required. The 100 folding cots are to be stored away until needed.

* After a survey of avaliable space it

was decided to set up these beds in the Y. M. C. A, and in schools in case of a shortage of beds in the

. hospital.

Town salesmen are not anticipatany immediate wartime use for this equipment but feel that it would be invaluable in event of any disaster, such as flood, hurricane, or fire. :
