1ST PERIOD ENDS AT SCOUT CAMP

Boys Hurry to Finish Merit Badge Tests; 2d Term Opens Monday.

By TIM TIPPETT

Anyone dropping out unexpectedly al the Boy Scout Reservation yesterday would have had an experience something like this: First, it was immediately apparent that everyone was very, very busy. * The 225 boys attending this first camp of the season had until 3 p. m. to complete their merit badge tests,

second camp will open Monday. Here and there in the shade of the old trees on the reservation could be seen a group of Scouts taking their tests in woodcraft and other things a good Scout must know. Walking past “officers’ row, ” the visitor finally would reach the last cabin, which was rapidly turning green under the diligent brushes of Camp Director William A. Sanford. His two helpers were Robert Breedlove, 1314 E. New York St., and Robert Schatz, 10 N. Riley St.

Schatz Is Daring

Master Breedlove was the more conservative of the two, preferring to clo his painting standing up, while his fellow Scout found it more interesting to hang down from the roof. Next to be seen was Francis Pray, 2174 N. Meridian St., gently easing in the direction of the mess hall in anticipation of the bugler announcing lunch. Francis is the only can-

Rattlesnake Unguarded Off to the left and slightly below Wiley is the Rattlésnake Camp . (left unguarded and at the mercy of any footloose Indians). The Rattlesnake Camp is somewhat more formal than its neighbors. In the morning the flag is raised and each evening it is lowJed with appropriate ceremony. aving no cannon to fire, the “Rattlesnake” uses firecrackers. , By now the hungry boys have made their way. to the mess hall and the place is bedlam while the boys polish off their luncheon with peach cobbler. ” ” ”

Poison ivy has been the big headache at the camp this year.. The 1941 crop seems to be in abundance and has curtailed some of the Scouting maneuvers. However, a glance at the infirmary records shows that there has been hardly any sickness at the camp so far this year. 8 8 =
