New Peace Offer?

' In recent days there has been circulating, around the American Congress, what is believed to be a hew German peace offer—distinguished, that is, from other offers which have been more or less constantly passed from gullible hand to gullible hand at the Capitol. Obviously, the American congressmen can hardly be expected to approve a peace that would legve Germany in possession of all of Europe. WELat has now been proposed is, apparently, the restoration of “all” the conquered countries to ‘“complete independence,” subject only to their willingness to allow Germany to “dominate” the area. That it would be much more pleasant and profitable for Hitler to be assisted by a lot of native Quislings than to have all the trouble of squeezing ‘co-opera-tion” from the conquered by per-

WITH BRITISH FORCES IN THE MERDJAYOUN SECTOR,

Syria, June 27.—The bitter French resistance to the British advance in Syria shows some signs.of diminishing but this may be due to Vichyite preparations to take up new defensive positions. The outstanding developments of the last two days are: 1. On the coastal front a further

British advance of a few miles toward Damour, south of Beirut. 2: The recapture by the Australians of the bitterly contested town of Merdjayoun on the central front. Merdjayoun was the spearhead of the Vichyite salient, within sight of Palestine. Just north of Merdjayoun begins a valley, running south to north, which becomes the hollow between the Lebanon and anti-Lebanon mountains.

The town, first captured by the British, was retaken by a vigorous French counter-attack, then recaptured two days ago by the British, who still hold it. Vichy bombers, with a fighter escort, made a further mess of the

Offer A Failure
