LONDON, June 27.—The warden * stopped digging and turned to the crowd: “Quiet, please! ‘We're trying to hear him.” The crowd became/silent. Standing before the ruins of this corner pub, which had been originally demolished some days before by a German bomb, they also listened. For the past our they had stood with open mouths watching a. lone member of this squad, perched on the trembling peak of

the last high wall, knock level after level of bricks loose. = They had wafched the bricks go tumbling

down into the ruins, and as they watched they silently wondered when he, too, would go tumbling down. For as they stared, that young soldier on the wall, spurred on by the silently admiring audience and evidently determined to give a good show, swung his pick with greater and greater abandon as he did an toccasional cakewalk.

He did fall, of course. . . . Hy

pick struck a hard piece of mortar

and his shoe failed to grasp. se-

curely a loosebrick . . . then he too

was tumbling down the bricks into what had been the bar of the pub. So when the Pioneer squad, augmented by two off-duty air raid wardens who had been standing watching, stopped digging and one of the wardens said, “Quiet, please! We're trying to hear him” —the crowd became silent. The young soldier, the man they couldn't see, was singing. And the sergeant said, “That's

Terrence, for you.’ The dumb Mick's always showing off. He's got & good voice, though, ain’t he?”

Then the rescue squad .was digging again.’ There was a wide hole now, just wide enough for the one man who was down there scooping out bricks and making eddies of plaster dust swirl up around him and onto the people who by now had edged off the sidewalk onto the debris. The voice continued to sing. It went on and on, rich and strong and masculine.

“All the Irish can sing,” a man said. .Suddenly a warden shouted, “Get out! The rest of the wall’s coming down!” The man who had been digging down in that hole scrambled out in time. The bricks came sliding down in a small avalanche, pushing splintered wood and sending a choking cloud of dirt aver all. Then there was silence again. The rescue workers just stood there. The sergeant shouted, “Ter-

rence!” Then, louder, “Terrence!”

He grabbed a shovel from one of the soldiers and began digging rapidly. No one stopped him. They stood

looking, watching the sergeant dig like a grubbing terrier. At last his spade shot through into the hole, and then he was widening it. Finally he disappeared beneath a pile of planking and bricks. The soldiers and wardens and the crowd stood still. They couldn't do anything, anyway. “Terrence,” they dimly heard him shout, “It's Mike. We're coming. Can you hear?”
