Chamber of Commerce Gets Results From a $3.50 Bulletin on Defense

— By ROGER BUDROW *

‘INDIANAPOLIS HAS 170 PLANTS that work in metal and there are idle machihes in some of them. The big manufacturers all over the country who have defense orders are searching high and low for just such idle metal-working

machinery.

That is the situation that the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce has stepped in to the middle of, to become a clearing house of information. Every week, or maybe oftener if it is necessary, the Chamber of Commerce mimeographs ‘an information sheet and sends it to these 170 plants.

In it are items saying that the X Y Z Co. wants sub-contract work for an automatic screw machine and then tells what kind of Vol X Y Z Co. equipped i handle. Orit says that A B C Co. someone to do some metal stamping for it. The bulletin ‘gives addresses and detailed information so the two manufacturers: can .get together. It costs Roger Budrow 3 Chamber of Commerce only $3.50 each time it puts out one of these information bulletins. Yet the other day it resulted in the discovery that there were five automatic screw machines

in one plant here not being used.|

And here the Office of Production Management in Washington has been ransacking the country: for such machines! Another manufacturer called up Myron Green, the Chamber’s industrial executive, and asked him to mention in the next bulletin that he had some facilities for doing defense work. By two o'clock of the afternoon that bulletin was sent out that manufacturer had hdd two calls and got together with one of the firms that called. The Chamber is S anning to extend the area included in the bulletin service to most of central Indiana, working it through Chambers of Commerce in other cities. The committee in charge of the work

DEFENSE HEMS IN INDUSTRIES

Only Moderate Increase in Output Expected by l. U. Byreau.

Indiana industries not working on defense business are being “hemmed in” by the spread of defense production and shortages of raw materials, Indiana University’s Bureau of Business Research reported to-

day. “The defense industries are , operating as close to capacity as labor and‘ material supplies will permit,” the Bureau’s monthly business review stated, “and there seems little likelihood of further expansion until additional capacity is brought into operation.” Thus, the Bureau concluded, it is likely that the advance in industrial production in the next few months “may be quite moderate at best.” Service industries and the retail trade business are benefitting from the increase in consumer income. “Farm income,” the Bureau said, “pecause of the new loan policy of the Department of Agriculture, unfavorable weather in some regions

land an increasing demand for food,

both at home and abroad, is rising rapidly.” Pig Iron Plants Busy Because of the coal mine shutdown in April, the gain made in May was the largest of any industry but output was 35 per cent below the peak in March. Electricity production was 4 per cent greater than in April, and about 4 per cent below

December’s peak. Pig iron production in the Indi-ana-Illinois district broke all previous records in May and was nearly 10 per cent higher than in April Building contract awards, in terms of square feet, rose nearly 20 per cent above April. New car cales were slightly lower than in April but much less than the usual drop between the two months. “Retail trade, as reflected by department store sales and newspaper advertising, continued to hold its own. Newspaper. advertising was about 4 per cent better than inf

STOCK TRADING IS VERY SLIM

Some Leading Issues Fail| To Appear on Board; Prices Rise.

G NEW YORK, June 21 (U. P).— The stock market made an irreg- 1

ular advance today with trading dull. Demand for stocks was so small that some leading issues failed to make an appearance through the| session. Some only came out once. Largest volume was in Southern Pacific and Socony-Vacuum, which held at the previous closing levels. Steel shares’ were better on out-

look for a steel operating rate just under 100 per cent of capacity.
