WIEDEMANN HAS FRIEND IN COURT
It's Hitler, So Consul-Gen-eral at: San Francisco. Isn’t Out of a Job.
By LEE G. MILLER Times Special Writer
WASHINGTON, June 18.~Capt. Fritz Wiedemann will be looking for
&.new- job now. But he should have no trouble; he is a versatile fellow, end he has a friend. The friend’s name is Hitler, Capt. Wiedemann : + has been German Consul - “General at San Francisco since March, 1939. Now by White House order, he and other German consuls must close up shop and get out. Capt. iede- : : mann hgs been ‘Capt. Wiedemann Wm Helv 8 shan widely believed that the German Embassy here takes orders from him. There have been many indications that he is in charge of Nazi propaganda and espionage throughout the Americas. Such reports have been deprecated by the amiable Wiedemann, a tall, dark fellow with a hearty laugh. He has even hinted he was out of favor in Berlin. But neither such hints nor his bland jovidlity have made many} friends for him in California, outside of Bundists. Society has been ¢ool to him. It is said that when he phoned a city official one day to complain that the water in his house was rusty and tasted “like poison,” the official retorted with a suggestion that the Captain drink hearty.
Was Hitler's Superior
In the World War Fritz Wiedemann was a lieutenant of the 17th Bavarian Reserve Infantry, and as such a superior of the mustachioed dispatch runner who later was to become Der Fuehrer. ; Hitler, in the days when he geemed a somewhat comical figure, babbling endlessly in beer cellars or scribbling in a cell, tried several times to enlist Wiedemann in his, Nazi Party, but without- success. Fritz preferred the tranquillity of his Bavarian farm. In 1933, however, after Hitler had come into power, he is said to have bumped into the Captain at a railroad station in Berlin and forthwith commandeered his services. For a time Capt. Wiedemann gerved as secretary to Rudolf Hess. After the blood purge of 1934, in which some say he had a hand, he became Hitler's own private secretary and personal adjutant. . Gradually the Fuehrer trusted him withemore and more responsible missions. In the Czechoslovakfan crisis of 1938 he sent him to England, where the Austrian Princess, Stephanie Zu Hohenlohe, introduced. him. The Captain later modestly gave “Steffie” credit for laying the groundwork that made the Munich agreement possible. A year earlier, when Capt. Wiedemann came to this country for a few weeks’ visit. “Steffie” was on the sathe ship. In fact, when he received the ship’s-news reporters, the Princess answered many of the questions directed at him.
ENGLISH LIBRARIAN TELLS OF DEFENSE
NEW YORK, June 18 (U. P.)— Herbert M. Cashmore, city librarian of oft-bombed Birmingham, England, arrived in this country by Yankee Clipper yesterday to tell his American colleagues how to defend their libraries against air attack. Mr. Cashmore, at the request of the British Foreign Office, will attend the annual conference of the American Library Association which opens in Boston June 19. “I have 30 libraries under my control,” he said. “The roof of one has been destroyed by fire and we have had incendiary bombs in 12 others. However, we have lost only 12 books out of more than 1,250,000. When I see the enormous number of churches -and schools damaged in my city, I count myself lucky.”
