WASHINGTON, June 1% (U. P.). —Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt today indirectly predicted - the biggest

fashion fight of the century-—over|.

the type of uniforms which volunteer women defense workers should wear. She didn’t call it a fashion fight but related the circumstances under which the uniforms are to be chosen. The circumstances speak for themselves. Mrs. Roosevelt said that the uniforms cannot be chosen until Civilian Defense Director Fiorello La Guardia selects a committee of 45 (male and female) advisers who, in turn, will pick out what they consider the best uniform from samples which have been prepared for their inspection in New York nejt week. The ' First Lady reported that Mayor La Guardia thinks uniforms are necessary for two reasons: First, to make workers in different defense activifies recognizable; and second, to build morale by making the women feel that the value of their volunteer services is recognized by the government. Mrs. Roosevelt, who disclaimed knowledge of women's psychology, opposes the suggestion of one fashjon group that there.be two uniforms ' for each type of work—a

dress uniform, for parades and other formal occasions, and one for the actual. kK. She explained that, in her opinion, the Pehief purpose of parades and “show” occasions would be to familiarize the public with the uniforms worn by different home defense workers and that, therefore, the volunteer workers should wear their regular work uniforms on such occasions. Mrs. Roosevelt particularly liked, for indoor work, the apron-like garment which can be worn over any kind of dress, or even without a skirt if it is sewed up in the back.

washable and cheap, not costing more than $3. She thinks it is suitS0le for any figure and yet attracve. She hoped that the uniforms would not be as expensive as were those she wore as a canteen worker during the World War. It should be remembered, she reminded, that these uniforms are to be bought as extra costumes for extra work, not to be worn on one’s regular job. Reverting to her World War experience, Mrs. Roosevelt said she felt sure that the uniforms gave women the couzage to do jobs they might not have done otherwise.
