SOME GUESTS ALREADY HERE
National Defense = Gives Many First Holiday; Facilities Added at Dunes.
Indiana this year is preparing to : Shjeriain more guests than ever beore Already the State Parks and other resorts have had the first influx of visitors some of whom, because of national defense jobs, are getting their first’ vacations. Thousands of iothers—Hoosters or not—who have come to love Indiana, will follow. Most of the State fun centers - have been improved. Recent addi-
tions to Dunes State Park include
10 miles of new foot trails, four new vehicle bridges, fire tower, new comfort stations, parking for 1200 cars, 20 acres for camping, group camp, seven overnight cabins, 25
cottages rented annually, hotel ac-| commodations and remodeled Dune-
side Inn. Additional picnic facilities have been provided this year by a new shelter which will serve four different groups at a time at McCormick’s Creek State Park. The shelter is of native stone and timber and has two rooms each with a fireplace and special cooking ovens. Here there are 700 acres of the most majestic scenery of the Hoosier southland, a modern hotel, swimming pool and organized areas for group camping. __ Oldest among the Department of Coanservation resorts is Turkey Run, which draws throngs from Chicago and is called Indiana’s most popular state park. Near Marshall, it consists of 1301 acres covered with virgin and second-growth timber, some of which stood when Columbus discovered America. At Spring Mill State Park a reconstructed village of the 1800s has & massive stone grist mill operated by a 22-foot overshot water wheel, & quaint log tavern, post office, apothecary, cobbler shop, distillery, hat factory, nursery, school house and several residences. One of the great natural wonders of Indiana is Marengo Cave at Marengo, 13 miles north of the Ohio River. Discovered in 1883, this subterranean world has massive halls, crystal domes, grotesque ceilings, glitterthg stalagmites and stalactites—more beautiful formations of erystalline limestone than in any other. known cave of similar size in the U. 8.

During the summer months (the park opened, last Sunday) it is possible to visit. most of the glaciers and many of ‘the lakes by hiking or horseback. ‘ The park entrances are on the main transcontinental line of the Great Northern Railway. dian pueblos where the Indians dance to their gods that their crops may be abundant, that their hunters be successful, and that their pueblos will flourish,
Few of these dances and ceremonials occur on fixed dates. Some are seasonal. The Hopi Snake dance, for instance, comes some time in August. Navajo fire dances follow the first frost. One of the most extensive series of ‘ancient cliff dwellings in the Rio Grande territory is at Frijoles Canyon. Many of these have been excavated and restored by eminent archeologists.
In direct contrast to the Frijoles Canyon cliff dwellings, in the depths of the canyon, the ruins of the ancient city of Puye lie on the elevated mesa of tke:Pajarito Plateau. Puye has not been occupied for more than 1000 years, yet there are visible plaster covering on the walls of the cliff rooms, many pictographs on the outside walls, and even tracings of smoke from the fires in the dwellings. Directly on the road to Puye is Santa Clara pueblo, famous for its black pottery. Sante Fe itself has many points of interest. The historic Palace of the Governors, built between .1609 and 1612, from which 103 governors administered state affairs, now houses the Museum of New Mexico and the State Historical Society.
