That Man With the Big Bat, Joe DiMaggio, Is Swinging Again

By PAUL SCHEFFELS United Press Staff Correspondent " NEW YORK, June 17 (U. P.).—There were a number of reasons why

the New York Yankees did not win

their fifth straight American League

pennant to get a new record last year. An important one was the fact that Joe DiMaggio was unable to start the season in the outfield.

With the Yankees since 1933, DiMaggio has yet to play a full season. Of 155 games last year, DiMaggio took part in 132, including several brief appearances as a pinch-hitter. As Jake Powell was out for almost as long, the glub’s righthanded batting power was reduced to a minimum. The Yanks, turned back time and again by southpaw pitchers, lost too much ground early in the season to regain a commanding position. After their first 55 games last year, most of them DiMaggioless,

the Yanks were in fourth place,!

612 games off the pace.

This year Joe has been in harness from opening game and today after 55 games, it looks as though he has supplied the spark necessary to put the Yankees back in the world series. - After yesterday's 6-4 victory over the league-leading Cleveland Indians, the Yankees were only one game away from first place. They boast a winning streak of eight games including a clean sweep of the three-game set with the Tribe.

The ~Yanks bettered a major league home run record yesterday. Joe Gordon clouted his 10th of the season to bring Yankee homer production to 21 mn 12 straight games which surpassed the mark set by the St. Louis Browns in 1922. DiMaggio, now batting .338, connected for a double to run his hit-

ting streak to 29 games, tying the

- club record shared by Roger Peckin- | :\%

paugh and Earl Combs. Bill Dickey’s two-run single topped a three-run rally in the eighth that won the game. Shortstop Frankie Crosetti was spiked and suffered cut fingers and a slashed right elbow. He'll be out five days.

. Buck Newsom of Detroit contin-

ued to go from bad to worse. He

lost his eighth game of the year as the Washington Senators scored a 8-1 victory over the Tigers who dropped into the second division. The New York Giants snapped a three - game Cincinnati winning streak with a 6-0 shutout as Bill Lohrman scattered three hits so ef-

_ Pfectively that only one runner

passed first. The Chicago Cubs whipped the Philadelphia Phillies, 3-1. Babe Dahlgren made his debut at first base for Chicago, singled once in two

official trips and turned his first defensive chance into a double play on, which he made two putouts and an "assist. AL

Subs for Sam - TOLEDO, June 17 (U. P.) —Dutch Harrison, professional golfer from Chicago, will replace Sam Snead of West Virginia, in the Inverness Invitational golf tournament which begins Thursday, officials said today. Snead injured his back in a fall a month ago and was to have been paired with Ralph Guldehl. The Snead-Guldahl combination won

the Inverness last year.

Fall to Fourth

Birds Drop 1;

By UNITED PRESS ‘The American Association pennant race was tighter than ever today, with Columbus fallen from first: to fourth place. Minneapolis took over the top berth, by beating Columbus last night, 14 to 9. Kansas City advanced to second place with a T-to-5 victory over Indianapolis, - and Louisville rose to third by taking Milwaukeé, 6. to 3. There was only 10 points difference between the top and the bottom of the, hs division, an e Elon Hogsett Millers were at the top by one point. The Millers made their bid in the fourth inning with a nine-run attack that put them ahead, 11 to 2. But after that big inning, the going was harder, and Columbus threatened several times to get out of hand. Rookie Joe Hatten was the winning pitcher, although Walter Tauscher and Elon Hogsett had to ‘help him out in the seventh, when the Birds scored five runs. Fabi Gaffke homered for the Millers and Bert Haas hit a fourbagger for the Birds. The hitting was even in the Louisville - Milwaukee game, with each side getting 11. Left Fielder Art Parks’ round-tripper in the seventh, with one on, and another talley in that frame, gave the Colonels the game. :

hind Johnny Marcum’'s seven-hit pitching. Marcum also shared in the attack, by driving in two runs with three hits.

Thom Out to Upset Marine

Light heavyweights, with the undefeated Sergeant Bob Kenaston facing Coach Billy Thom in the main even, will provide all of the action on the outdoor wrestling card tonight at Sports Arena. Dave Reynolds, of Idaho, opposes Stacy Hall, assistant mat mentor at Ohio State University, in the opener, while Jack Hagen, of New Orleans, grips with Jules La Rance, of Canada, in the semi-windup. Kenaston, a Marine, has gone unbeaten here since he first appeared last winter. In an appearance last Tuesday he whipped Frankie Talaber, it being Frankie's first loss. Thom hopes to be the first to upset Kenaston and reports himself in top shape for the match which calls for two falls out of three.
