Sulfa Drug ‘Cured’ Guinea Pigs, But What of Humans? By Science Service CLEVELAND,

0O., June. 16.-A

.{ group of - tuberculosis ‘patients have

been treated with promin, the new sulfa drug Mayo scientists: found a promising remedy on guinea pigs. It will be at least a year before results will determine whether: or not a “cure” can be as effective on humans as on animals. Small doses of this drug can be safely given to patients, Dr. H. C. Hinshaw reported at the meeting here of the American Medical Association. This much, but no more, has been learned from a careful trial in a limited number of patients during the last two months. This trial followed extensive trials of the remedy .in guinea pigs infected with human tuberculosis germs. The disease in guinea pigs, even though produced by the same germ as causes tuherculosis in’ humans, is, however, an entirely different disease, the Mayo clinic scientists emphasize.

Promin, which is a sugar-con-taining relative of sufanilamide, has not yet been released for general distribution. It is a “definite poison,” Dr. Feldman said, and must be

handled with discretion as. is the

thing ‘of a triumph for its¢first two months of clinical trial,

| | but it is far too early to say whether

or not it will benefit these tubeicuTole, petiens. act, it is too early to t to find evidence ‘of any effect of the drug in X-ray pictures of the lungs. Tuberculosis patients and : their

| relatives are warned not to hope

for too much from the first report of clinical use of this drug, and not to expect to be ‘able to get it.

“JOINT REM

- Would Strengthen Family |

Unit in"U. So By MARSHALL McNEIL Times Special Writer WASHINGTON, June 16—Requiring joint income-tax returns

i

|from - husbands and wives should

help strengthen the family unit,

land this-is a moral and ethical ||objective: Congress should seek as |a corollary to raising revenue, Rep. '|John W. Boehne (D. Ind) of the

House Ways and Means Committee sald today. | The committee voted last week to require Joint returns, pro-rating the

tax liability between husband and ‘wife in proportion to ‘their respec- ‘| tive incomes.

* That the Committee's experts expect ‘the provision to ‘cause: many married taxpayers to pay higher than heretofore is: indicated by- the ‘estimates of yield, running as high as $250,000,000. Fight Is Certain The proposal for joint: returns is certain to meet a considerable fight, if only from Congressmen and Senators representing the eight: com-munity-property states, where mar‘ried taxpayers have always filed separate returns even though only one spouse actually has an income— thus enjoying Federal income-tax ‘| privileges not generally ‘accorded taxpayers in the other states. However, it seems evident from the estimate of yield that tax experts believe the use of family trusts, partnerships and ather de-

thus permitting separate returns, is widespread in the 40 other states. “Pirst,” Rep. Boehne said, “I be-

+ | lieve it is fair to call upon married

taxpayers ‘living together to file a joint return. It is not fair to let such married taxpayers in one Dart of the country pay less tax than those elsewhere.

Large Yield Expected -

“The joint-return provision is expected to yield a large amount of | revenue. And if in enacting, it we can accomplish an important’ moral purpose, then it is doubly good. “I realize. you cannot legislate morality. But the tendency of legislation and of court decisions is to strengthen the family unit. “In WPA legislation, for example. we provide for work for heads of| Bg families. We recognize and attempt to bolster up the family unit in the Social Security Act. Much the same end is sought in the housing laws. “And if in this tax bill, as we raise a large amount of revenue, we can take another step toward strengthening and keeping together the. family as a unit, then that is a good purpose.” Cites Court Ruling

Rep. Boehne pointed, however, to: the fact that the U. S. ‘Supreme Court about seven years ago refused to let Wisconsin tax a family as a unit. He and other members of

‘the committee believe that the new

Supreme Court would uphold the provision for joint income-tax returns just agreed upon. The Treasury, which earlier this|Z° year indicated it would seek legislation to compel joint returns from married persons: in the communityproperty states, is sald to be unenthusiastic about the committee's proposal, on legal grounds.

NON-STRIKERS WIN COMPENSATION SUIT

NEW CASTLE, Ind. June 16 (U. P.) —Approximately 233 non-strik-ing employees of the Ingersoll Steel & Disc Co., who were thrown out of work during an eight-week strike last July, today looked forward to the receipt of more than $25,000 in unemployment compensation checks. Circuit Court Judge John H. Mor= ris said the workers had signed a petition stating they were not in favor of the strike and had expressed a willingness to work and ere ® tie to unemployment

The decision came on a suit filled against the appeal tribunal o i Indiana Unemployment mp “| tion Division after the TUC had ots turned a decision against the employees seeking benefits. IUC officials said the money would be paid out of the company’s reserve account and in the event of a reof the decision the fund would be reimbursed from the

State-wide fund.
