Will Old Zup Leave Illini? Decision Soon ‘Board, Divided in
Opinions on Coach
CHICAGO, June 12 (U. P.) ~The board of directors of the University of Illinois Athletic Association met in a closed session today, reportedly to settle a long-standing dispute over Football Coach Bob Zuppke and Athletic Director Wendell L. Wilson. Although members of the board described the meeting as a routine session, alumni pressure for an investigation of Illinois athletics—parlead to definite action. - At least one director refused to place the blame for recent weak Illinois football teams on Zuppke. “He could produce good teams if he had the material,” said Harry A. Hall, Waukegan member of the board. Others, however, were said to be in favor of retiring Zuppke on a pension plan similar to the one tendered at the end of the 1938 season. Still other groups favored the release of Wilson. Milt Olander of Toledo, O., former assistant to Zuppke and chairman of the board, called today’s meeting. Also expected were Wilson, Hall, Zack Hickman, Evanston, and three faculty members—W. w. Yapp, J. W. Goble and F. E. Richart
\of Champaign.

BOBBY CRUICKSHANK once sunk a 20-foot putt only to have the ball knocked out of the hole by a startled bullfrog. The wee Scot had to putt again,

with the result that the match went into extra holes. ; Cruickshank missed a threeinch putt that would have given him a tie in-a Texas Open. He was nine down to Al Watrous in a P. G. A. Championship when on the 22d, the Detroit professional conceded a tricky six-foot downhill putt. Cruickshank won
nine of the next 11 holes and the match on the 41st.
2 SHOULD NEVER 60 BEYOND HORIZONTAL POSITION IN
Cruickshank wagered $5000 that his World War I pal, Tommy Armour, would defeat Harry Cooper in the play-off for the 1927 National Open title over Pittsburgh’s difficult Oakmont course. Armour prevailed. Cruickshank fired a long iron dead to the pin to tie Bobby Jones at 296 in the National Open of ‘23 at Inwood. He lost in the playoff. Long irons are the strongest part of Cruickshank’s game, and consequently his favorite weapons. He plays them crisply, his timing verges on perfection. His stance for this shot is slightly open, with the left foot drawn back about three inches. At address, he keeps the weight well on his heels and plays the ball about center. Cruickshank advises golfers to guard against overswinging. In long iron play, he says the club should never go beyond the horizontal position in the backswing. When this fault - occurs, the player is robbed of distance. The downswing is not timed correctly. The ball is lofted or topped.

Carrying those implements, he has nothing to worry about except to get the score right and fancy up the lead paragraph with a phrase stolen from the writings of Rudyard Kipling or Robert W. Service. It has been a fairly simple life and we simple folk have enjoyed it in our simple way, but of a sudden times have changed. Life
begins to get tough for us on Sunday when there will be presented at the Polo Grounds something called “father’s day sports parade.” A hasty glance at the program shows that almost every known sport except yacht racing and mountain climbing will be represented.
List of Equipment After due thought we sports writ-
extra equipment that will be needed to do justice to this four-hour program. The events with the special implements needed to cover
-each are herewith listed:
A three-round boxing match between ‘Benny Leonard and Lew Tendler. For this you will need to carry in your right-hand coat pocket an elderly gent who saw Corbett fight Sullivan and has witnessed all subsequent title fights. He should be loaded down with yellowed newspaper clippings which he will thrust in front of your face just when Tendler throws a left. A touch football game involving such stars as Tuffy Leemans, Ken Strong, Dave Allerdice, Charley O'Rourke and Len Eshmcnt. The referee will be Red Friesell, who gave Cornell five downs against
‘Dartmouth last season. The equip-
ment for this one will consist of four Cornell old grads, packed in a basket, who will pop out every time Friesell blows his whistle and chant “Fifth Down, I Love You” to the tune of “High Above Cayuga’ 8 Waters.”
This Is the Killer
A three-round fight between an usher who works in the Polo Grounds and one employed at Ebbetts Field. For this you need 125 policemen to protect you when the battle royal breaks out in the stands between adherents of the Brooklyn. Dodgers and New York Giants, ; A basebal’ game between teams from Camp Upton and Fort Jay. Hugh Mulcahy, formerly of the Phillies, wil pitch for Camp Upton. Every spo:-ts writer should take along a stenographer (preferably 22 years old and blonde) to get a shorthand interview with Mulcahy on how it feels to get some decent support from an infield for a change. A one-set tennis match between Alice Marble and Mary Hardwick. For this one you should have your wealthy aunt from Tuscaloosa who
_ | knows nothing about tennis and will
cover your bet immediately when you offer to wager 10 bucks that Marble wins. An attempt by Greg Rice to break the world two-mile record. By all means take along the dumb sophomore from Vassar and be ready to sock her right on the nose when she asks the usual question: “What's that man running for; nobody’s chasing him?” The only other thing on my list is a special device for unscrambling mixed metaphors that come over the loudspeaker system. It was ordered when the announcement arrived that Harry Balogh, who shouts items of interest at prize fights, would be one of the announcers.
