FRITZ LANG LIKES ANTI-NAZI MOVIE

HOLLYWOOD, June 12 (U. P.)) — Fritz Lang directed ‘Man Hunt,” one of the bitterest anti-Nazi pictures, and relished every foot of it. The reason Mr. Lang fled Germany was because Joe Goebbels ordered him to do a biographical flicker glorifying Hitler.

Exception Proves Rule

Girl Going Up Film Ladder.

HOLLYWOOD, June 12 (U. P.).— One of the quickest ways to win a screen test and a trip to Hollywood is to take first place in a beauty contest 2000 miles or so from here. The only catch is that return tickets are not furnished, and the girls usually need them. It is easy to find a beauty contest winner or two on every lot, but it is hard to find one who has been there more than six months or who is doing anything important in pictures. An exception to prove the rule is Evelyn Keyes, who is at Columbia for the lead opposite Robert Montgomery in “Mr. Jordan Comes to Town.” This is the film which started out as “Heaven Can Wait.” It is budgeted as one of the studio’s major efforts of the year. When Miss Keyes finishes her part she will go to work in “Ladies in Retirement.” sharing top billing with Ida Lupino and Louis Hayward. Miss Keyes narrowly escaped the

Atlanta

ners. The contest she won took place in Atlanta, Ga., and was sponsored by a movie studio. Her contest victory brought a screen test but not a contract. So she went to work as a dancer i» Atlanta night clubs and saved enough money to finance a trip to Hollywood. For six months she sought work in the movies without the slightest success. Her break came when she met Jeanie MacPherson, writer for Cecil B. DeMille. Through Miss MacPherson she met Mr. DeMille, who arranged a test and placed her under contract. Her first picture was “The Buecaneer.” Since then she has played important roles in “Gone With the Wind” and “The Lady in Question.”

Carey Party Bids Goto old Timers

HOLLYWOOD, June 12 (U. P.).— Invitations to the barbecue and party celebrating Harry Caréy’s 33d anniversary in motion pictures have disclosed the whereabouts of many

not been heard from for years.

Carey’s leading ladies at the old F. B. -O. Studios, wrote Mr. Carey that she is now the wife of Maj. Victor Bertrandias, Army officer assigned to the Douglas aircraft plant at Santa Monica, Cal. She will attend the barbecue at the Carey ranch near Saugus and the press preview of Mr. Carey’s latest picture, “The Shepherd of the Hills.” Jane and Eva Novak, stars of early Westerns with Mr. Carey, are living in Los Angeles. Louis Arzner, who presided at the old Hoffman Cafe in Los Angeles when it was the favorite rendezvous of players and directors of the Biograph Co. in. 1912, will attend the party with his wife and daughter, Dorothy, noted

GARY THEATER CO. LOSES FILM PLEA

CHICAGO, June 12 (U. P.)~The U. S. Court of Appeals has upheld a District Court order dismissing an attempt of the Gary, Ind. Theater Co. to change by injunction the motion picture distribution practices of Columbia Pictures and several distributing companies. The Gary company claimed that it was unable to obtain Class 1 pictures for seven weeks after they appeared in Chicago South Side theaters, which it alleged were competitors of Gary theaters.

Silent Colman Is A 'Regular Guy’

HOLLYWOOD, June 12 (U. P.) — Ronald Colman is supposed to be a mystery man of Movietown, but he’s a mystery only to movie gossip writers, whom he distrusts and avoids. Lots of people know him, especially since he married Benita Hume, who likes to give parties. Colman is a patient fisherman and a businesslike poker player for low stakes. He knows half a dozen rather simple card tricks which he has been delightedly displaying for years. Another hobby is photography. He quotes a good deal of Shakespeare, personally keeps all the accounts of the household, never owes anyone a penny. The time he relaxes most successfully is around a piano—usually with Frank Capra, Bill Powell and Harold Lloyd—singing barbershop ballads.

MINER PLAYS ROLE

William Nestell, who plays the role of a horse-trader in “Secret of the Wastelands,” a “Hopalong Cassidy” mystery, is the owner of a mine at Lone Pine, California.
