Theater Men Attack Double Bills

HOLLYWOOD, June 11 (U. P).—

ouble features were under. attack ay at the combined conventions of’ the Motion Picture Theater Owners. of ‘America and the Pacific Coast Independent Theater Owners. - L. O. Lukan, Seattle, chairman of a theater owners’ committee appointed to wage a nation-wide fight against double bills, ' called ‘upon all exhibitors to ‘aid in the battle. Mr. Lukan said that owners

Alaska had signed a petition opposing double feature programs. Other speakers appealed to exhibitors to report any abrogations of the recently signed Federal consent decree against block booking. Mary Pickford welcomed delegates at the opening of the convention, attended by 800 exhibitors. .*“We are prepared to prove again,” she said, “that next to a free and honest press, the motion picture. is the most effective media of unifying a nation.”

1941. Gordon's Dry Bin Co., Lid., Linden. New

REVIEWS IN MINIATURE of this week’s neighborhood newcomers: “The Great Lie” is another of Bette Davis’ splendid portrayals. This time she has a role which still gives her a chance to display her fine talent for distress whilé at the same time being maternal and noble, a “good” woman, opposed to the “bad” one, Mary Astor. Miss Astor is really something as the cold and conceited ‘concert pianist who marries

George Brent on a spree. They find later that the marriage is illegal. Hattie and Sam (her brother) McDaniel also take ad-

vantage of some good acting op-.

portunities. Tomorrow through Saturday at the Irving and Rivoli, tomorrow through Sunday at the

Granada, Sunday through Wednes-

day at the Belmont and Strand. “The Bad Man” is for Wallace Beery fans. This is a remake of Porter Emerson Browne's - play done on the stage and screen by Holbrook Blinn (remember?) and later by. Walter Huston. Wallace Beery: plays the character much as he did “Viva Villa” rather than as the suave Lopez of the earlier versions. Tomorrow through Saturday at the ‘Irving, Rivoli and Strand; tomorrow through Sunday at the St. Clair; Saturday through Tuesday at the Fountain Square; Sunday through Wednesday at the Belmont and Uptown, 2 8-8 THE SHERIDAN tomorrow, Friday and Saturday shows the first chapter of the first milliondollar serial to come from Holly wood, “The Riders of Death Valley,” starring Dick Foran, Carillo, Buck Jones and Big Boy’ Williams. It will be shown at 7 p. m. only those days along with the Regular bill.

CRITICS AND DEVOTEES of the cinema can see just what has been done by the industry in the 28 years since the first movie with a plot—“The Great Train Robbery”—was made by Edwin S. Porter. This 800-foot thriller will be shown at the Fountain Square today, tomorrow and Friday*along with today’s version of the same film starring Bob Steele. Also booked is one of the first pictures ever made, a short comedy called “The First Kiss.” The regular second feature is “Sleepers West” with Lloyd Nolan and Lynn Bari.

THERE ARE MORE angles to a theater manager's life than in that of a geometry professor. For instance, there’s been a lot of talk about | the picture “Intermezzo” since the title song has been climbing up the hit parade. Morris Cantor of the Esquire has been watching its rise like a doctor reading a fever chart. As soon as it hit the top he booked the picture for the Esky. Seems as if he has. something there because it was scheduled to finish a fourday run tonight but it probably will remain for a.few more days, at least. It’s being shown with another: revival, “Broadway Bill” starring Warner = Baxter and Myrna Loy. In “Intermezzo,” of course, are Leslie Howard and Ingrid Bergman. : 2 #2 2 ; ONE OF THE FIRST and one of the latest band leaders to turn thespian are on the Tacoma’s bill tonight and tomorrow. Buddy

x |'Spring Meeting’ Proves. Keith's Cast to Be Adroit

* As a Shrine week offering, Keith's sixth summer season production,

| “Spring Meeting,” opened last night i |and fared .well.

Ever since summer stock revived

"| about. seven years ago, loyal bands kp [of followers of the legitimate stage | have arisen: almost everywhere to

cheer .it, on. Sych. a’ group, it is pléasing to: report, exists in Indianapolis - and many of its members were on-hand last night to applaud a rather dull: play. Had there been any doubts of the sterling qualities of Keith's players, last night's performance would have dispelled ‘them. Working with a poor and aged scrips the.cast polished the ‘tranished lines until they sparkled. That seemed to | satisfy everybody. ‘Hard Job Well Dons From - the standpoint of seeing what an adroit cast can do with a trivial script, the experience of attending this particular production is: worth while. “Spring Meeting” is a comedy of manners . concerning the romantic struggles. of two unmarried daughters of a crochety Irish baronet, somewhat frayed at cuffs by the up-

| keep ‘of a stable of horses and book-

makers. “The girls are roughing il because of -papa’s ‘stinginess, remoci¢ling the cast-off garments of long-dead aunts and taking turns at taking barks because of the rising cost of ue . Joan, the elder daughter, falls in love with Michael, the ex-stable boy and veterinarian on the premises, much to the consternation of her father, Sir Richard. He has planned that she should wed Tony Fox-Col-lier, the son of a former boyhood sweetheart recently divorced.

Miss Mitchell Scorzs Tony, however, loves Baby, the younger daughter. After a series of situations, love triumphs over all. And swept away by the young romance going around them, Sir Richard and his boyhood sweetlieart renew their troth. | The ‘one bright spot in the play is the characterization of an eccentric maiden aunt, Miss Bijou, by Alice Baxter Mitchell.

Walter Gilbert, as the stingy Sir

Richard, strengthens the weak lines|

of the part no end. Valerie Cossart as Joan and Betty Goodrich as Baby perform as creditably as the book permits. Whitner Bissell as Michael, ‘the groom, has done better in mare intense roles. William Roerich, the young, sophisticated Tony, is quite smooth. As Tiny, the Mother, Katherine Meskill is striking and rather good.

Clyde Franklin is a fine, old]!

Irishman as James, the butler. Gordon Parker, as Johnny, the shiftless man of all work, also does a good bit. The minor ‘characters are more finely drawn than the others. M. J. Farrell atid John Perry, the authors, have failed to unite their

separate contributions in the com-| |

edy. There are a few excellent lines, many poor ones. But the cast SMOOES Sut the play’s bumpy spots.
