Colorless Trash? FROM THE MAIL we glean . the following comments by W. C, W. Jr. on this matter of ‘box * office desertion: “I think I know the reason why. It’s simply because pictures aren't as good as they used to be. I used to average three a week. Now three a month in unusually good picture weather surprises me. | “‘The Letter, ‘The Sea Wolf’. i and ‘Fantasia’ and one or two that | were superior can’t counteract the i flood of silly, inane, colorless trash shown two for the price of

more people neglect the films. When movies are ‘good again, when prdoucers make worthwhile pictures, then the SRO. sign may be dusted off, but not before.” And now that we've taken up 4his matter of what's wrong with the movies, . maybe now is ‘the time . to ‘suggest that Hollywood place more emphasis on the visual ‘aspects of its ‘output. :
This is the quality upon ‘which the industry was built and Hollywood probably would do well to remember it. With the exception perhaps of a few super=duper extravaganzas, a great many movies really offer ‘little ‘more for . the ‘eye to: see than the usual stage play. ' The emphasis is on aural entertainment, so-called sophisti‘cated drawing-room talk. ‘A notable deviation of this practice is Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane.” In cage you're not fed up with hearing about that picture even before it gets to town, it can be pointed out that the camera as much. as any other factor tells the story, or at least gives you the tipoff to various ‘scenes. ‘However, the procedure in Mr. | Welles’ picture doesn’t merely resolve into such ruses as running the camera focus up the side of a skyscraper to inform you that the: ‘scene takes place in a big city. Shooting over a medicine bottle : spoon in one scene immediately gives at least the hint of suicide.
And Another Thing
NOW THAT we're submerged in reforming the whole Hollywood setup, the matter of “timely” pictures may be taken up. It is an
daily headlines as much as possible in writing scripts. - Already Herr Hess’ flight from the Nazis has been incorporated into a Warner Bros. film. But if one goes back over the outstanding pictures for the last few years, he will find few that made an attempt to: capitalize on day-by-day happenings. “The Private Life of Henry VIII,” with. Charles Laughton, is generally in cluded in lists of the best pictures - of the last few years, ‘and it is a fair: example of how newsy a film must ‘be to win the public's plaudits, ‘The play's the t ” and probably % ly will hing

OF COURSE, there are other things that may or may not be wrong with motion pictures, but they are many and involved. Frankly, I had no idea of going this far with the subject at hand. But I hope Hollywood will find it helpful and take care of the

Ted Lewis is scheduled to bring week, starting June 13.
As the take finished, visitors on the sidelines joined the applause of extras at the tables. It was easy to imagine the envy of some of the atmosphere players who used to be well known in movies or the theater. Ted Lewis has spanned two “or three average careers and is still as busy as any bandleader in America. ‘And it’s a cinch that he has made more money than any of ‘em, and has been seen and heard by more people. He came over and parked with his wife and a reporter. Mr. Lewis is nearly 50 and looks it but you'd peg Ada about 32. It happens that they celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary a few weeks ago and Ada wasn’t a child bride, either. She was ‘|a ballet-chorine on Broadway.
On His Fifth Movie
“Pictures are ‘all right .except at 1times like this :morning when they got me up at 6:30,” Mr. Lewis said. “And then we didn’t make a shot until about 11. I don’t know how they ever- finish anything. I coulda been playing golf. “This is my fifth movie. The last one was ‘Here Comes -the Band,’ and I subtitled it, ‘There Goes Lewis’ I hope people have forgotten that picture. “I don’t mind some ribbing, though. In fact, I'm writing a number now called ‘I'm Gettin’ Away With Murder.’ It'll be about how I can’t sing and can’t dance, and my clarinet playing’s pretty corny, and I do a lot of old numbers—. Excuse me; they're ready to rehearse.”
: Born in Ohio
Of course, Ted Lewis never can get away from those old numbers— such as © en My Baby Smiles at Me,” which’ he helped write and introduced in 1920. And then there were “Just Around the Corner,” “Sunny Side of the Street,” and 1“Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave ‘|to Me,” Some of them will be ‘used in the current. picture at Universal, an Abbott and Costello comedy called “Oh, Charlie!” The flicker was made
and when the latter turned out to be a gilt-edged hit the studio decided to spend a lot of money in dressing up this second ‘vehicle of the team. Ted Lewis is part of the

Didn't have his own outfit until 1916, when Ted Lewis and His Nut Band opened at Coney Island.” ‘In 1919, Lewis was starring in three places at once in Manhattan— at 'the Palace, the Greenwich Village Follies and the Ziegfeld. Roof. He isn’t quite so prominent now, but he’s almost as busy—rushing around the country with a company of 27 on’ bookings for 47 weeks of each
