Sherry, Tweeds and Ladies

By SAMUEL DASHIELL.

we presume that the ‘United States is not neglecting this choice spot.” ‘He was a member of the French] Deuxieme Bureau, once one of the most efficient espionage and. coun-ter-gspionage organizations in the world, and he was talking about the mysterious persons who frequent the Hotel Aletti here. International spies, agents provaeateur, ‘official commissioners, mu~ ‘nitions saiesmen and officers: in civilian garb have gravitated to. the Aletti as the war swings across the Mediterranean into Africa. : The Aletti is considered one of the four main centers where international intrigue flourishes in an atmosphere - of port, sherry and champagne, gentlemen in tweeds and oxford grays and dainty ladies not too hard to meet. - The others are the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, the Minza in Tangiers and the Palacio in Lisbon. The Aletti, with:its casino and terraced gardens, was built as’ a fashjonable rendezvous for the Algerian Centennial in 1939. It fell into obscurity. until the war projected French North Africa into the “new order.” Then Came Germans Spies made the Aletti a regular port.of call even before the French Armistice. They came in increasing numbers after the Italian Armistice Commission chose the ‘hotel as its ‘African headquarters. The Italian Consul:in Algieres, a pleasant official ahose - white hair and easy-going manner-seem at odds with his clickirig Pascist salute, is nominal ‘chief. But With him are two admirals, two genérals, two ‘colonels, and a group of majors and captains After- the- Italians, the Germans came, although technically they had no official standing here. They comprise. ~about eight officials, They

.- wear civilian clothes and speak per-

fect, French. ‘An occasional German officer, in resplendent uniform, swings through the Aletti, but he usually is en route

on some special mission.

invade North Africa—and all rumors purport to come straight from the “horse’s mouth.” The Aletti seethés with excitement and ‘teems with people during the cocktail hour, There are consuls general and vice consuls, often

representatives of American, Swedish and German firms, all of whom knew. each other before the war and probably ‘will continue to be friends afterwards.” In a corner can be found a well-dressed American oil| man with a couple of convivial men who sell American tractors. Elsewhere is an American miner who carries a little hammer to crack ore and says the copper is so rich in Morocco that he can tap it raw on the surface. Courtesy Is Keynote "But in all this teeming crowd courtesy and gentility is the keynote. The sight of hard bulges in clothing makes one feel uneasy in this atmosphere, but my friend in the Deuxieme Bureau assured me, “We don’t carry sawed-off machine guns, we use weapons like you journalists —typewriters and telegrams.” Recently there has ben a swing of heavy industry agents to Casablanca, for fear that they might get caught here if the United States should become involved in the war.

~7|tion work. Bayon

By DAVID MARSHALL

THE NATIONAL DEFENSE PROGRAM will be responsible for. some| a of the improvements in your 1942 ‘model automobile, That car will be better looking for lack-of a lot:of- flashy. grillwork. and chromium trim. Itll have better streamlining. What ‘the ‘trade calls “costume jewelry” (that bright metalwork) is said to have 'concealed some faults in styling. The car. will’ be lighter: in ‘weight ‘and a little more economical to run. ‘A few models won't be noticeably affected. Ford products;- for instance, are likely to retain a good many: bright metal trimmings; though these will be made of thin, stamped chrome. steel instead : of die-cast zinc covered with nickel chromium. . Some high-priced cars still have aluminum cylinder ‘block. heads, and ‘a majority of all cars still use aluminum pistons: Substitutions. will cut the use of aluminum 50 per cent, Chevrolet: always has: used cast iron pistons, and Ford changed to:an alloy steel in: 1935: when a new casting process permitted the ‘substitution without extra weight 3 Engineers say that all companies can switch to cast iron or steel without |3 costly retooling, though the machines which now work aluminum will take longer to cut and polish the harder materials. Other typical changes: Chromium-molybdenum steel instead of nickel steel for transmission and differential gears; steel-and-bakelite timing gears instead of aluminum; copper radiator shells instead of brass (which is part zinc). ® J ”

Chrysler Raises Prices

ON THE OTHER HAND, new automobiles will be somewhat harder to get. Prices, too, will be higher. : A forcast of what is to come oé¢curred yesterday when ‘Chrysler Corp. raised prices on .Dodge, . Chrysler; Plymouth and DeSoto cars. ‘ Price increases on the Chrysler line ranged from $15 to $53; on.the Plymouth from $10 to $37; and on the DeSoto from $15 to $47. Dodge did not immediately announce its price changes. Thus the first motor maker ‘steps up his prices. Others undoubtedly will follow. Although the manufacturers won’t be quoted until they petually make the raises, the industry as a whole assumes they must made.

IN INSANITY CASES|

EVANSTON, Il, June 6 (U. P.).— Changes in the classifications of in- ; sanity are predicted by two North-. western University psychologists who - have completed new type studies with mental asylum patients. Dr. Graydon L. Freeman and Julain .Pathman reported finding little difference between the excitable patient who requires a straitjacket and fhe apathetic one “who sits dead to the world in a corner.” Internal reactions of both persons to a shock stimulus, the psychologists said, are almost similar. “We found,” he said, “that electrical charges due to perspiration on
