Here is a home. of simple yet, in some ways, elegant Colonial charm with a spaciousness so. very suited
It was planned and built by Forest Kellogg and designed by Alden Meranda, architect, for Mr.and Mrs. L. J. Badollet: Although its address is 4475 N. Meridian St., the entrance is on 45th St. ’
The fixtures, woodwork, interior and exterior decor, furnishings and floor plans all, characterize the Colonial, ‘Throughout, the light fixtures and hardware are ‘brass’ and crystal, and woodwork and ceilings
White frame. siding above the Indiana limestone set in random ashlar pattern gives the house added length. Shutters, wrought iron rail-
black, heightening the ‘white cleanliness of the house. °° All the rooms are roomy without seeming overly large. The entrance opens into a center hall, which has a guest closet, and has ‘paper with an oyster-white medallion. against a grey background, The same paper is carried up the stairs to: the second floor hallway and also’ blends: with the dining roem dado, * . In the living room, as in several of the other rooms, the wall paper is particularly effective. Here it is a two-tone, three-inch stripe -in light turquoise... The all-over car-| pet is in an antique maple tone. There is a large center bay window in the west wall, a Colonial fireplace with marble hearth in the east wall, and built-in bookshelves on either side of a south picture window.

A doorway near the southeast corner opens to a hall leading to the lavatory, the basement door, and the
‘|kitchen. In the hall is a large linen
closet. The lavatory paper has an undersea pattern of blue fish against a peach background. These colors in lighter tones are carried 0 the tile floor and wall. In the Basement. ; In ‘the basement are two large rooms, one a social room, the other containing an oil furnace, incinerator, laundry equipment, water softener and fuel tank. The social room walls are concrete blocks painted ivory with red frim. There is a brick fireplace and the four windows are set ‘into light wells. . A clothes chute near the laundry tubs drops from the first floor lavatory and the second floor bath. The all-electric kitchen is ‘most compact. The blue marbleized linoleum ‘has a deep blue border and a feature stripe of lemon-yellow, the wall color. © Cabinet counter and splash are in the deep blue of the linoleum border. Over the double sink is a wide window which has copper screens like those throughout. White enameled cabinets take up the whole south wall and enclosed in one of them is a ventilating fan. In the kitchen, as in both baths, there are venetian blinds. The gay breakfast room opens off both the kitchen and dining room with a porch on either side so there is an ‘effect of a double breezeway. Breakfast room paper has a white background with diagonal vines of bright colored fruit. Set into the end wall is a combination china and linen cabinet with open. shelves finished in a deep wine which is the feature stripe color of the parquet linoleum. - * a :

HOUSING SHORTAGE IS TERMED SERIOUS
ATLANTIC CITY, N. J, June 6 (U. P.)~The United States is faced with a housing shortage much more serious than that at the end of the
first World War. That opinion was expressed i ‘the
this week by Gerhard Becker, Director of Public Welfare of Worcester, Mass, and John G. Leukhardt, associate ‘technical adviser of the National Institute of Health, U. 8S. Public. Health Service. / Mr. ‘Becker: and Mr. Leukhardt said that the country’s. housing problem centers around: 1. A shortage of low-rent dwelling. units, with at least 20 per cent of such ‘units unfit for: habitation. 2. The fact that illness and disability are.in direct ratio to crowded living conditions, with home accidents . ‘increasing heavily ‘as: the rental rate: declines. 3. The defense area concentrations of new populations which promise to grow amore acute as the defense pro-|. gram accelerates. : fe only solution, they said; lies a co-ordinated attack by housa “health and welfare agencies.

tiful year after year. If grass is fed regularly there is ne reason for giving it a vacation when the lawn can be most enjoyed. The. amount and frequency of watering a lawn is determined: by the type of soil, the height the grass is cut, the exposure of the lawn, temperature and rainfall. Evaporation is: reduced by cutting the grass 1% to 2 inches high, since the - longer growth shades the ground. High cutting also promotes deeper rooting ‘so grass can reach to a greater depth for moisture. Steep slopes. receive less benefit from rainfall and watering because there is more surface run-off. Once the soil gets too dry it is difficult to bring: the moisture ‘up .to the best amount again, ‘especially if ‘it is a heavy - soil ‘which bakes hard and cracks open. A sprinkler that provides effect of a slow, easy rain ‘is: flv because it allows the water to soak in as 1 falls and does not flood. the ground or run off the slopes. ‘Do not allow a sprinkler: to’ oper-
