His companion had little trouble ‘attracting the immediate attention of officers and soldiers of Company ‘A, 121st Infantry, who were engaged nearby in range maneuvers. j Sergt. E. E. Stout and several privates plunged in and began searching for the boy. On his fifth dive, Sergt. Stout found him. After nearly 20 minutes of first aid, Gordon was revived and taken to the Post Hospital. He is reported in good condition. The name of his companion was not learned. “Privates who took part in the rescue were Earl:Orem, Darrell Hel‘mick, ‘E,: O, Heberstreit: and G. A. Kieffer.

~WASHINGTON,: June 6°(U.. P). oe House advocates ‘of legislation to stop national defense strikes ‘sought today ito prohibit the use of ‘Army
appropriations for payment of workers who have struck for more than 10 days.
Rep. Joe Starnes (D. Ala.) said he would offer such an amendment | to the $9.826,509,492 Army Appropriation Bill now before the House. He said it would not abrogate a worker’s right to strike but would provide a “cooling off” period of 10 days during which the worker could decide either to return to his job or forever forfeit his right to draw wages from Army funds. Administration leaders said they would oppose Rep. Starnes’ amendment. They are ‘drafting changes in the pending “draft property” bill which would limit it to a grant of power to the President to commandeer strike-bhound defense plants. Also pending in the Senate is a proposed amendment to the conscription act which’ would permit the President tao take over and operate any defense plant affected by a strike or labor dispute. The sudden resurgence of Congressional ‘sentiment in support of anti-strike legislation coincided with efforts of ‘the National Defense Mediation Board :to iron out major
‘I defense-labor disputes.
President ‘John L. Lewis of the C. I. O’s United Mine Workers called a meeting of the unién’s policy committee to consider Mediation Board recommendations for ending the three-months-old soft coal dispute which has threatened to prevent a new stoppage of bituminous mining. The U. M. W. and ‘the coal operators were given until next Monday to either accept or reject the recommendations, which eliminate the Southern *differential” for day work : but ‘keep it for men working on tonnage
sharply reprimanded leaders of one of his organization’s own unions. He denounced: the leaders of 12,000 sawmill and lumber workers ‘who have struck ‘mills in. the Puget], Sound, Wash., area, for their defiance ‘ to return to their jobs. He accused the leaders of indulging in a “campaign of misrepresentation, slander and abuse contrary to all the well-defined policies of the C. I.O.” The Board postponed indefinitely negotiations on the United Automobile Workers’ strike at the North American Aviation Corp.'s Inglewood, Cal, plant to permit union officials to return to the West Coast to determine the membership position on their demands for wage increases and a union shop. The Board awaited a reply on its recommendations for settlement of a threatened strike of 9000 Columbia River Basin lumber workers in

In the Columbia River case, both the union officials and representatives of 35 logging companies agreed to recommend acceptance. But in dhe Puget Sound dispute, Union President O. M. Orton .has defied the Board’s recommendations and accused the agency of “labor-bust-ing and strike-breaking tactics.” Mr. Murray’s castigation of the Puget Sound leaders. was unprecedented. He said Mr. Orton's charge was “a most reprehensible, lying defamation.”
