JUDGES TO SPOT

ORIGINAL DESIEN

Pet Idea May Bring Builder Trophy or Cash Prize at National Air Races.

One of the highlights in the Scripps-Howard Junior National Air Races each year is the original design event, sponsored by L. W. Greve, president of the National Air Races. : = This annual nation-wide competition (Aug. 30-Sept. 1, this year) is the only one in the country which recognizes the ingenuity of model builders by setting up‘ a “special contest in which they may enter their dream ships and compete for trophies and cash prizes. Models in the contest tannot be plain freaks. Each contestant must fly his plane for the judges and explain the working principles and advantages of its particular design. Rotor planes, various. types of pushers, twin-motored craft, slottedwing jobs, helicopters, others involving aerodynamics not commonly found on ordinary planes are what the judges look for.

They Must Be Different

Original designed models are common and are not the kind for this

special event. They must be different in their operation. For instance, an autogyro differs from ordinary planes because its rotors are constantly- revolving, causing air to flow over them, maintaining flying speed. Ordinary planes must move forward with a definite speed in order to cause air to pass over their wings and generate lift. So give your pet Idea some

transport should" have pusher and tractor engines and be a flying wing. Work it out and take it to the contest. ! Last year’s winner was a gasoline powered pusher with a tricycle landing gear. It flew very well, which counted heavily in its winning, as ‘many of its competitors failed to perform. Another winner was an unusual racing plane design. It, too, was a gas job and was demonstrated by the remote control method. _ Therein lies a whole new field for model designers. Almost any kind of speed ship may be flown by the “G-Line” or remote control method. If youre worried about how your ship will behave when on its own, rig up one of these control systems

and play safe.
