PANIC DEFENSE

Train Selves to Map Cause In Crises; ‘Steady’ Is Watchword.

"By MAJOR AL WILLIAMS Times Aviation Editor “Don’t give up ‘the ship!” That's what the men of the sea taught the ‘men of the air. You don't know how easy it is to & ___ step over the side of a damaged airplane, pull the rip-cord and. float down to safety. The urge to save self

most overwhelming — call it fear, or the instinct for selfMaj. Williams preservation, or : what you will. It would take a lot of words even to sketch what happens when the human signal system flashes “danger!” But it doesn’t require thou-i sands of hours aloft for an airman to Suliivate his defense against

Cc. With the first flash of danger— subconsciously, as the result of a habit ' that has been planned— there’s a command from his head, “Steady!” ;

Means Breathing Spell

I have heard airmen talk among themselves: as they never talk to those who are foreigners in the air. I have heard them explain just how

they cultivated this habit of saying to themselves, “Steady!” That word means the breathing spell, and even if it is only for a thousandth of a second it is enough for the brain to sort out the flood Ch i and signals dumped nto it. : I don’t want to leave the impression that the word “Steady!” is actually contemplated by cool, calculating -airmen. It is, rather, symbolical of the realization which comes to them early in their careers that there must a tightening, a mental speed-up, in search of a decision before action. In many men, the determination to live is stronger than in others. In some it is so strong that they will go to any length—and, again, the going many times is subconscious— to discipline their minds for thé fateful second when the right or the wrong action means the difference between living and dying.

* Gallant Action!

The other day Ensign H. E. Tennes, U. S. Navy, took off from the Navy flying field at San Diego. Radio control told this young airman that his landing gear, then extended, had been damaged in the takeoff. His was the privilege to decide whether to bail out or make a crash landing on the flying field or in the nearby bay. We know the flash of danger sig-—nals-that man felt. He rejected the . easy way, evidently cancelling the bail-out right off the bat. With his landing gear extended, he must have reasoned—and soundly—that a crash landing on the ground would have made a mess of things and a snap turn upside down. He chose the water landing, made a peach and saved his ship, which was salwaged and, after a check and repair and the installation of another mo"tor, placed back in service. Gallant action, that!

STATE PARK POOLS AND BEACHES OPEN

The recreation season at seven Indiana state parks was under way today with the opening of bathing beaches and swimming pools. The beaches and pools will be supervised by qualified lifeguards experienced in handling crowds of bathers. This year marks the opening for the first time of the new bathouse and beach on the lake at Spring Mill State Park. General improvements ‘have been made in the beaches at Indiana Dunes, Pokagon and Bass Lake Parks. Lake - Shakamak at Shakamak State Park has not reached its former level because of lack of rainfall. The lake level was lowered last year to permit extension and rebuilding of the beach and installation of floats and diving towers for use - in. the annual championship
