Motorists Advised to Follow Few Simple Rules to Conserve Rubber

By DAVID MARSHALL ; | RUMORS THAT CAR OWNERS might have to curtail motoring— even week-end trips—in order to conserve rubber were stoutly discounted today by the American Automobile Association. While defense production and transportation problems may make it _ Necessary to apply priorities to rubber, there is no indication as yet that would reduce motorists’ normal operations, the A. A. A. declared. ” According to Thomas P. Henry, A. A. A. president, travel is such a big factor in our national economy that it should not be unnecessarily discouraged. He suggested, however, that motorists can conserve rubber —a vital raw material—by following some simple and effective rules: + “Always keep the proper amount of air in the tires, since over-infla-tion and under-inflation both shorten tire life. . . . Make sure wheels are properly aligned. . . . Shift the tires from time to time to get an even dis- . tfibution-of wear. ... Drive at moderate speeds and avoid sudden braking. . . . Take the curves easily. . . . Remember, every squeal means waste. .... On long trips, particularly in hot weather, stop occasiondlly to let the tires cool... . . Heat engendered by friction softens the tire fabric.” £ With 120,000,000 wheels rolling along the streets and highways you cgn see how much rubber good driving practices can save.

Firms Chip in With Official Cars

= ALL THOSE OFFICIAL CARS you'll see popping around the Speedway today have been donated by various automotive manufacturers and distributors to help the industry’s great proving ground operate efficiently. = This year most of the cars have come from Chrysler Corp. and its divisions but other motor makers have chipped in, also. One way to tell when there’s been a crack-up is to watch the cars of two manufacturers ~=Chrysler and Crosley.
