IN AND ABOUT GASOLINE ALLEY. . .. Mel Hansen is trying to correct compression difficulties in the Fageol Special. . . . The boys in the Sampson garage can’t recall when they've had a full night's sleep. They brought Cantlon’s Six-

but the car still ‘is bothered with sneezes. . . . Leon Duray is having his fun threatening to “sue” Joe Lencki, who hasn’t changed the No. 10 on Emil Andres’ wagon to No. 19. ..". George Robson, Leon's jockey, is entitled to No. 10. , , . The Maserati that Mauri Rose has on the pole was stubborn yesterday and refused to start. ... Three times Lou Moore and aids had to push it through the pit section. . . . Motor trouble forced Russell Snowberger to give up a practice run. . .. Seen on the track yesterday: Wilbur Shaw, Mauri Rose, Rex Mays, Doc Williams, Frank Wearne, Cliff Bergere, Billy DeVore, Chet Miller, George Connors, Emil Andres and Sam Hanks. . . . The Midget car that belongs to Frank Brisko has no camshaft. Hydraulic action is the secret. It’s supposed to offer smoother performance and may be the forerunner of much faster big cars. The car has had 200 hours running and revs up to 5600. , . . Al Putnam took a look at the sky yesterday and said: “Shucks, this is no weather for me to qualify. The wind should be blowing twice as hard.” . .. Of the 42 cars originally entered for the 500-mile race, 39 have heen on the track to date. . .

ST. LOUIS, May 28 (U. P.).—It had to happen sometime but it took the two shrewdest ivory traders in the jungles of the major leagues to prove it's possible to have your cake and eat it, too. The traders are Sam Breadon, advocate of Vitamin Bl pills as a cure for jitters, blue days ang losing ball clubs, and his colleague,

Branch Rickey, who can nose out a promising ballplayer from the darkest brush. Their St. Louis Cardinals are currently leading the National League and are determined to stay on top. But the mystery of how the Cards can operate on a “selling policy”!

Rickey, Mass Production King, Tells How He Does It

that has made more than one baseball executive rend his very best franchise in despair—today stands revealed. The explanation, according to Rickey, is “mass productiof of pitchers.” : i As related in an article in the Sporting News, national baseball weekly, Rickey said the Cardinals were able to reverse the “buying” policy of most first-division clubs because of its plentiful supply of young pitchers. He pointed out the Brooklyn Dodgers, currently in second place, as a “buying” club. Rickey estimated that the Cards have sold $368,000 in players since the spring of 1940—many of them to the Dodgers. He said the Cards were not weakened as a result because of “mass production—principally in try-out camps and primarily in pitchers.” Rickey said that due to the Cards’ system of producing playing material the team has never been so well entrenched with strong reserve pitchers. He pointed out stronger reserve pitching as the chief difference between the 1940 Cardinals and this season’s club. Another factor, he said, is the catching. i “Several years ago when; we were expanding our farm clubs and had a total of 30 minor league connections, I found myself lacking in enough good players to go around,” Rickey ' explained. “There wasn’t enough capable incoming talent. Something had to be done.. “I hit upon the idea of try-out camps in various localities,” he said. “We started the plan five years ago and it proved so satisfactory we began running three crews, traveling across the country and holding tryouts.” |
