DeSoto Sets New Sales Record in April

THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION, long a bitter foe of automotive excise taxes, is going to “suspend” opposition because revenue is urgently needed for the defense program. A Furthermore, the A. A. A. has told the House Ways and Means Committee that it considers the 20 per cent tax suggested by Leon Henderson, Federal Price Administrator; preferable to the ‘Treasury's

recommendation for a 7 per cent tax. : Thomas P. Henry, president, wrote the commities that the A. A. A. favored the 20 per cent tax “because, in addition to raising revenue, it is designed to produce desirable objectives from. the standpoint , of defense requirements and the maintenance of a sound economy in the emergency and post-emergency periods.” “We recognize,” Mr. Henry continued, “that we are confronted with a serious national erhergency and that burdens’ must. be shouldered

SPEED COSTS. MONEY as well as lives. According to a study made by Willys-Overland Motors, Inc. time saved in driving at excessive speeds is far from worth the additional cost. An average driver, increasing his car's speed from 35 to 45 miles- an hour, adds a cost of $4.15 per 1000 miles and saves 6.4 hours. Thus he pays 65 cents for each hour saved. * If the speed is stepped up to 55 miles an’ hour, it costs $12.45 per 1000 miles covered, prunes off 10.4 hours, and brings the expenditure for time saved to $1.20. Increasing the speed to 65 miles an hour costs $20.75 for each 1000 miles, saves 13.2 hours, and costs $1.57 for each hour saved. In fact, the additional time saved for each 10-mile speed step-up

actually diminishes. ‘The faster ‘you drive, the less goodit does,
