“£ LEAD- -HEADED NAILS & USED IN METAL WORK

A EL Lead-headed nails’ are an essen- - tial element in sheet-metal construction. The lead caps seal the nail holes mn galvanized, or otherwise coated -eorrodible metal, against moisture seepage which ‘results in the gradual ‘rusting out of ‘widening areas. . “When self-sealing lead-headed “nails are ‘used in combination with # a rust inhibitive priming.coat of red lead paint, maintenance. costs are reduced to a miAimum, While toproats of pure white lead and oil will prove economical ‘for ‘a wide. variety nf lasting color: styling treatments.

USE WHITE. LEAD PRIMER Best painting ‘practice, questions the application of an oil vehicle paint such as pure white lead over a yarnish vehicle: primer ‘such as aluminum, because paint films: of varying elasticity and wearing proprties do not make the most effecHive combination. To be on the safe ide, apply a white.lead priming coat under body and fish coats of white ilead paint.

Gardening—

The once-popular rock garden seems to We going the way of the circular canna bed and the iron reindeer in the front lawn. In the

called wall garden.

‘The wall garaen can be conveniently’ fitted into a large or small retaining wall, or made four square to enclose a pool or rose garden. The important part is to have the walls constructed properly at the beginning to save later grief. Suppose that a bank already exists and instead of a sloping terrace you want a retaining wall. Settle on the front face line of the “wall and then cut back the bank three feet from this line. The stones may then vary from two feet ta 18 inches in. depth, as this will leave a good foot of fresh soil in which the plant may take root. Use local stone if it is available but avoid all extremes, either of size or character. Keep in mind that the wall is only a quiet background, which does not need to attract too much attention. Stones must neither be too large nor too small. If boulders are used, they should be split and always have flat faces. By following these simple rules, you will get a greater feeling of solidity and permanence. The wall should slope gently back, each stone being set slightly back of the one below, and be slightly tilted into the earth behind. This gives greater strength to the wall and drains back all water to the roots of the plants instead of shedding it. Pack the soil behind into every crevice and cranny as the wall is being built, leaving no air pockets in which roots Will perish. Have a hose handy and wash the soil down with a gentle stream. This insures: solidity. Plan pockets in the wall face for plants and if large plants are ready, they may be put in as the building of the wall proceeds. Colonies and drifts of one species are more efective than dotted specimens. A good soil mixture to use consists of a fine loam, well enriched with old manure and made porous by a
