ANNIVERSARY NOTED

$50,000 Embezzlement Case |

Outlined i in ‘Firemen’ Ss Trial

“Evidence intended to prove that two former officers of the defunct Indianapolis Firemen’s Credit Union,

Inc. embezzled $50,000 from the in< stitution during the last seven years was outlined by Deputy Prosecutor Albert Ward before a jury in Crim‘|inal Court today. Mr. Ward told the jury that evidence will show that Cecil F. Scott, secretary-treasurer of the ‘Union, and John Staab, chairman of the Union's advisory committee, manipulated the books of the corpora= tion to cover shortages. itnesses will’ testify, Mr. Ward said, that- both Scott and Staab converted the $50,000 to their own

Thorpe | uses.

Russell Dean, defense attorney,

declared .that “the State cannot

prove, that the tefendants took a

single dollar from the corporation for their own use.” He said the defense evidence will show that the overdrafts in the accounts were made fo pay bills of firemen who were members of the union. [ Mr. Ward said records of State examiners will show overdrafts on the accounts of both defendants every month since 1934 and that ledger cards were changed to show credits instead of overdraffs. “Many thousands of dollars were taken out of the cash drawer and never put back,” tht. e will show,” | Mr. Ward said, He asserted that between December, 1939, and April, 1940, more than - £10,000

was missing from the union's cash’

records.

ELECTROCUTED MAN

BOSTON, May 22 (U. P.).—Medical science admit defeat today in an attempt to restore life to the body of an .electrocuted murderer. The attempt was made by Medical Examiner William J. Brickley who said that adrenalin injections, chest masage - and electrical stimulation of the heart failed to bring the dead man back to life. He told the Medico-Legal Society yesterday. that he succeeded only in producing spontaneous movement of the man’s arms, confirming “a fact already known—that the muscles of ° the body live after both the brain and heart are dead and legal death has occurred.” ; The 70-minute experiment was | undertaken within 35 minutes after the unidentified murderer had been

pronounced dead.
