Ben Hoga s G Came From His Worst Club

By ART KRENZ NEA Service Golf Writer

The shot that gave Ben Hogan his greatest thrill was played in this year’s New Orleans Open. “At the 72d hole par 5, I was trailing my partner, Henry Picard, by two strokes,” says the new Hershey, Pa., Country Club pro. “This hole is about 510 yards and a slight cross wind was blowing from right to left. Picard drove 235 yards. I was out about 280 but to the left of the fairway. : “Henry's second with a wood was short of the green. My only hope was to get an eagle and have Henry take a five. From my position I. had to get the ball up quickly to carry some - trees about- 150 yards in front of me and still carry a bunker guarding the green. “I decided on a No. 4 wood, incidentally the worst club in my bag, but the only one that might work in this spot if I could execute the shot the way I wanted to play it.

left, I tried to get a slight fade on the ball to hold it straight. I did just that, landing over the bunker and stopping 12 feet short of the pin. I missed the putt for an eagle and Picard also got a birdie, so I finished second.” Hogan claims he was satisfied because he had played that second shot the way he wanted to play it and he made it with the club with which he plays poorest. To play a shot of this type, the mighty mite advises setting the face of the club slightly open. Grip firmly with the left hand, keeping it firm.throughout the swing so not to turn over on the shot at impact and get a disastrous hook.
