CHURCH SESSION ‘OPENS TONIGHT
500 Expected at 10-Day United Presbyterian Convention.
Indianapolis is to be ‘host to the 83d General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church which will bring about 500 guests to the city beginning tonight. It is through the effort of the Rev. * W. O. Ball, pastor of the Woodruff United Preshyterian Church, that the 10-day cenvention is meeting here. The Rev. Mr. Ball is tmproving after a Very severe illness but has been unable to $ take an active part in local arrangements for the General Assembly. His DS er gE Robert and members of the The Rev. Mr. Ball /eongregation are in charge. Speakers of international and national note are to give addresses, a new moderator will be elected, and morale work among United States sailors, soldiers, and Government defense employees will be discussed. Plans are to be laid for conducting missions through the present crisis abroad. So far the denomination

sionary from the field. Women Give Tea
of the three United Presbyterian Churches in Indian--apolis/will be hostesses at a tea given Thursday in honor of women of the Presbytery and wives of delegates and visitors. The tea will be in the First United Presbyterian Church at 22d St. and Park Ave. The other denominational church here in addition to the Woodruff is the Witherspoon Church at 25th Bt. and Paris Ave. The pre-General Assembly evangelistic conference will be in the Woodruff Church tonight when the ‘Witherspoon Choir will sing. Following the close of the pre-evan-_gelistic conference tomorrow, general assembly sessions will be in the Severin Hotel. Among the speakers are Dr. Samuel M. Zwemer, professor in Princeton Theological Seminary, longtime missionary to Egypt and said to be one of the greatest. living authorities on the Moslem East and author of many books on the subject. Dr. Zwemer will deliver an address at the opening session at 7:30 o'clock tonight in the Woodruff Church. At the same meeting, Dr. R. W. Graves of Pittsburgh; associate editor of the United Presbyterian Board of Publication, will lead the worship service.

Others on the general Assembly program are Dr. Raymond Edie of Pittsburgh, newly appointed editor of the United Presbyterian, and Dr. Roy Davis of Oxford, O., superintendent of the Second Synod which includes Indianapolis. Present also will be Dr. C. T. Strangeway of Pittsburgh, executive secretary of the U. P. Board of Administration, who has been in charge of pean the program, end Dr. O. H, Milligan, stated clerk. The Rev. Thomas L. Grandy is pastor of the Witherspoon Church but the First Church has been without a pastor for some time.

Eire to Get Food Supplies in U. S.
WASHINGTON, May 20 (U. P.). ~President Roosevelt disclosed today that he has authorized sale or .charter of two merchant vessels to transport food to the civilian population of Eire. He also has authorized expenditures of $500,000 to dispatch the first consignments ‘under supervision of the American Red Cross. The ships, he said, will be manned by Irish seamen and will sail under Irish registry. In ad-. dition to the initial $500,000 shipments, paid for by the United States, he said, he expects the Eire government to make additional food purchases for its civilian population and transport the consignments in these. same ships. The authorization, he said. specifically does not include ship-
