“Our infantry was carried up to battle positions by trucks,” the tank driver said. “Most of them were machine-gun crews. We followed along in our tanks until we saw the ruins of Capuzzo still gleaming white in the shimmering sand glare.”

“We headed for Capuzzo when the German tanks—most of them 22ton tanks—appeared on our left.” These tanks had double turrets, , mounting a four-pound gun and two machine guns. The tanks were supported by a new-type, mobile antitank gun, either a 6-pound: or 8pound gun, drawn behind a truck or armored car.” “We waited until the enemy closed and opened up at point-blank 40yard range.” “What was it like?” «Tt was a colossal riot. The guns broke loose ang set our heads swinging from si to side inside the * tanks so that we members of the crew looked like clockwork dolls in a toymaker’s shop. I still feel as if my head were on a swivel.” “The German ground troops were terrified when they saw and heard . our tanks. But the German tanks stood their ground and fought it out with us.” “We banged away at them until our infantry was able to pass through and enter Capuzzo. They cleaned up the fort and then withdrew after giving the Jerries a thorough tousling. The bitterest sort of fighting has taken place at Caphizzo, which has changed hands so often that now it is little more than a pile of dust.
GARMENT WORKERS ‘TO GET PAY RAISES
Indianapolis garment workers will share in the’ $18,000,000 wage increase provided in a collective agreement signed in New York; yesterday, but the effect will not be felt here until July 7, it was reported ‘today. Officials of the local office of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America said the new agreement, . which provides wage increases of |f from 10 to. 13 per cent, provides immediate benefits for workers in the" ready-to-wear clothing manufacture, but delays the benefits for made-to-order houses until July. They said employees of the Kahn Tailoring Co., coming under the latter classification, will receive pay boosts of possibly as much as $100,-

David McLean, the Scottish ploughman, who captured. Rudolf Hess, No. 3 Nazi, with a pitchfork, when Hitler's erstwhile right hand man parachuted to earth on his farm one day last week, is to be heard on tonight's’ “We, the People” program, WFBM at 7 o'clock. Mr. McLean will be speaking from Glasgow. The same program will recall another big news event when the aerial rescuers of Lieut. Walter S. Osipoff give their version of the daring feat over San Diego Bay. Lieut. W. W. Lowrey, who piloted the rescue plane, and Chief Machinist's Mate J. R. McCants, who lowered Lieut. Osipoff into the craft, are to be the speakers. Lieut. Lowrey is scheduled for an appearance on Bing Crosby’s program Thursday night. Oddly enough, producers of the Crosby show had scheduled Lowrey for a routine appearance on June 5, he having been suggested by his superiors as a typical Navy test pilot. After the exciting rescue the date of his appearance was moved forward.

By LEON KAY United Press Staff Correspondent BUDAPEST, Hungary, May 18 (Delayed). —In company. with 27 other United States citizens, including nine women and four children, I arrived tonight from Belgrade aboard a Danube steamer chartered by the United States legation. Serbian War prisoners and Jews were clearing debris from the Belgrade streets when we left and public services were being restored gradually. One-fifth the city’s buildings were destroyed.

Coast near Albania to Belgrade I neither saw nor heard of any resistance to the German and Italian troops of occupation. Jugoslavia seemed entirely quiet when we left Belgrade. There were shortages of flour and bread, but other foods seemed adequate. Aboard the boat, obtained by the legation when no other means of transportation could be found, were the former United States Minister to Jugoslavia, Arthur Bliss Lane, and Mrs. Lane, en route home; Consul General Robert MacAftee and five other members of the legation staff, en route to other posts or to the United States; and several Latin American diplomats. As for me, I am now going to take my first warm bath since April 6.
