SUSAN IS played vivaciously by Katherine Meskill, which is altogether a happy casting. In the previous two productions by the Burton-Daggett company, Miss Meskill has been a mother—and a good. one. But in “Susan and God,” which will continue through Sunday night with Wednesday and Saturday matinees, Miss Meskill has a chance to display her full his trionic wardrobe. She’s a mother in this one, too, but of quite a different species than the two preceding ones. This role calls for plain, literal emoting. And the applause that broke into the: first scene after her introductory set .of lines is ample token of how Miss Meskill “went over.” Susan gushed. She spread her

Returning from Europe, Susan astounds her friends by announcing that she has taken up with a “movement.” Through this new teaching, she beams, all can find solace and the weary can be rested. Barrie, her husband, decides to take het up on the proposition, much to her disgust. After finding his daughter is little more than a boarding school orphan, he decides he’d like to win back his wife and re-establish the family home. Skipping several scenes, we may report that he does. The play itself is not one of world-moving force, nor does its stream’ of paradoxical lines make it always witty, at least not so to

In ‘Skylark,’ because I'm the butler, 1 was on salary as long as Claudette Colbert and Ray Milland were there. It's nice work—and I can get it, but I keep on looking for other kinds of parts.”

Jarred by Critics

Away back in 1910, Mr. Cossart played a butler on the stage and drew a couple of unfavorable comments from reviewers. After that

this play for some time; and the verdict must be that they make the mark. Veteran Walter Gilbert creates effectively the part of the husband, Barrie, and Priscilla Towers makes a good deal of her job as hostess to the “country estate” set. Newcomer to the cast is Mary Elizabeth Jones. Despite a few stuttered lines, Miss Jones does well as Susan's “orphaned” daughter who, after, all is at the age where stutters are to be expected. “Susan and God” is entertaining and Keith’s company is deserving of the support which CoProducer James Daggett asked for ‘in a curtain speech at last night's opening.

'Evacuates’' Home Just for Rosalind

HOLLYWOOD, May 20 (NEA).— A local bachelor who spends a lot of time in New York has'a handsome Beverly Hills home which he rents while he’s away.

The other day, a real estate agent called to ask if his house were on the market—she had a prospective customer. It wasn’t just then and he was about to tell her. when she said, “Miss Rosalind Russell is looking for a place for a friend who's coming from the east, and I thought yours would be perfect.” The young man was electrified. Miss Russell was his secret pash but he had never met her. So he did a quick about-face and said his house certainly was for rent, but he'd like to show it to them personally. Lots of conveniences and the view and such they might miss.

he doesn’t know what to do. He hadn’t planned to go to New York but it looks as if he'll have to.

By the time it's released, he will have butled in a couple more films. In about one-third of all pictures produced, there’s a butler somewhere, many with important ‘| dramatic or comedy chores, but all the jobs are divided among about a dozen actors. Only seven of those are definitely typed as butlers end are familiar to the public by face and name.

Types Mixed

The specialization, however, goes much further than that. Ernest Cossart, for example, never would dream of playing an Eric Blore type of butler; Blore never competes with Arthur Treacher—and so on. Halliwell Hobbes. and Wyndham Standing enact butlers with straight dignity, but give an impression that they'd like to unbend. Mr. Treacher is all disdain and condescension. Robert Greig is a ponderous, waddling symbol of upper-crust pomposity. Blore is a sputtering, perpetually insulted butler who chews up his words. Barnett Parker is the goofy, comedy type. Franklin Pangborn plays butler when a prissy one is needed. Mr. . Cossart, middle-aged and portly, plays it straight. His characters give an impression of sympathetic intelligence and a good but strained sense of humor. He’s proud of fan mail sent him by real butlers who consider him a credit to their profession. The stuffy, dead-pan demeanor of butlers makes ‘them handy instruments for scenario writers. EspeIt’s a cinch to

Right up to the big denouement scene in the middle of the last reel he’s one of the murder suspects.
