DULL TRADING Government Bonds Lower; War, Labor Worry Market.
NEW YORE. May 17 (U. P.)— The stock mar :et made an irregular advance today in dull trading while bonds were mixed with U. S. Government issues lower. Wheat eased and cotton gained. Opening prices on the Stock Exchange were :feady. Improvement was noted la! ter in many leading issues. However, the steel group was mixed and motors about steady. Several utilities made new lows for the year and the utility average was around the lowest level since 1938. There was little in the news to sway prices, but traders continued perturbed over the foreign situation. Anticipation of heavy demands by railroad labor also ‘was seen as a factor, retarding activity, but railroad shares generally were firm with a considerable volume of trading in Southern Pacific. Steel operations pointed higher for next week's schedules. - Pittsburgh was to start the new week at 100%. peér cent of capacity, up a point from list Monday. The Chicago rate will advance to a record
against 101.5 per cent at the beginning of the ¢ urrent week.

Demand Is Early and Heavy, Dun & Bradstreet Reports.
Q NEW YORK, May '17 (U.-P.).— Retail trade this week maintained a wide gain over last year while wholesale activity “continued to ex-
4
usually heavy and early demand for fall merchandise”, Dun & Brad-
street, Inc., reported today. Retail trade’ volume, holding about steady with the previous week, showed an estimated increase over a year ago of 15 to 18 per cent compared with a year-to-year gain of 15 to 20 per cent in the previous week. “Although buying was somewhat more erratic this week, retailers reported, the quickened selling pace of last month was on the whole well maintained,” the trade authority declared.
