F Olivers Are Fe eature of “Loew's Film
"Mile "Hamilton Woman' . Move; Compared to Lunts.
© The story of an earlier battle of England’s for power on the seas, acted by Vivien-Leigh and Laurence Olivier, is the essence of “That Hamilton Woman,” current movie at Loew's. / : More_ particularly, it concern ipe
life of the great British naval heto,|
. Admiral Nelson. And perforce it deals with Lord Nelson's love for the wife of His Majesty’s ambassador to . Naples. _At a time when England agaimr is faced with an Européan conqueror
(Hitler -instead of Napoleon), there| is. much more to this picture than]
historical significance. What Lord Nelson has to say of the futulity of making peace with Bonaparte is as timely today as it was at the turn of the 19th century.
* Qliviers Are Brilliant
. By accident or “otherwise, this is very likely the greatest plea the movie industry has made to America for helping. Britain. As a movie, “That Hamilton Woman” is not as momentous as the plea it delivers. * Miss Leigh and Mr. Olivier, in fact, aré its redeeming factors. The Oliviers are among the most brilliant acting couples now to be seen, and surely one would not be amiss in putting them upside the Lunts. They séem fully capable of making almost any moving picture move. As:Lady Hamilton, Miss Leigh is at once coquettish, noble and bequiling. One might find fault with certain of her characterizations—her first meeting with Lord Nelson, for example—but throughout the movie Miss Leigh obviously is working on a well thought out dramatic plan.
‘The Story Is History
- Mr. Qlivier, in the Admiral Nelson ole, is much as. one would expect, an actor of beautiful diction, figure and comprehension. If he is a bit stiff in his playing, then you may ~ attribute it to the part he has. Lord Nelson was not a social butterfly. . The story of “That Hamilton Woman” is to be had in the history books, with perhaps slight deviations from the movie version. Nel-
son, then a captain, puts in at Na-|
ples with news of England’s declaration of war. on France and a plea for 10,000 Italian soldiers to bottle, up Napoleon's fleet at Toulon. Through the intervention of Lady Hamilton, a favorite with the queen of Italy, Capt. Nelson gets his troops. Years later (1798) Nelson returns to Nzples, this time to refuel and push on to the campaign of Egypt. Havthen but a single eye and a single arm, Nelson again meets Lady Hamilton and again she is instrumental in getting him the Supplies he so sorely needs.
All Europe Afraid
All Europe then is quivering at the simple mention of Napoleon's name, and so finding aid in “the fight | against him is no easy task.’ * Victorious on the Nile and headed for other battles in Malta and Messina, the faithful Nelson hears that his love is in danger of ill treatment at the hands of an Italian revolution. He returns to Naples. ~From there hé proceeds to England with Lady Hamilton, there to be received with gossip about their affair and by a relentless wife. After an interlude of peace with Lady Hamilton in a country home, Nelson returns to the colors and meets Bonaparte’s fleet at Trafalgar. The British win, of course, but a bullet ends Nelson. . . And thus ends the affair with Lady Hamilton. Given a cast of su¢h accomplishments, plus a story intrinsically ‘good, the movie could not help but be moving, despite direction that is loggy.—F. P.

AS USUAL, the new pictures available to the neighborhood theaters for the first time this week reach some more screens over the week-end and finish up on the ones which opened Thursday. ‘With Humor
Every Act Is Funny Except One and It Isn't Supposed to Be.
Even with a compound microscope you won't . find the word
| “comedy” or “comedian” in the Ly-
ric ads. Goodness. knows . why, because three of the four principal units are funny enough to-pop a vest button.
| The fourth, being the six dancing
Starlets, isn’t supposed to be funny. Take Pinky Tomlin, He's billed as a singing star of stage, screen and raflio. His compositions (“The Object. of My AfTfections,” “What's the Reason?”, and “Love Bug”) are mentioned, too. But not a word about his quick wit at the microphone which is at its: best when late-comers are finding seats. You'd better get there before the show starts ‘if you don’t have a ready sense of humor.
? Slim Is a Parson
Then there's Slim Timblin. He’s identified as a, star of ‘“T'obacco Road.” Now, Slim and his ‘parson’ act were with us even before that perennial began -its long and dusty trek down the road of human de-
what the trade papers would describe .as a “riot.” Yesterday’s firstshowers ought to still have cramps today from the way they were howling about Slim’s version ®of the world’s genesis. ‘Finally a whole group of comedians—Gil and Bernice Maison with their superbly trained dogs and a
‘Imonkey. Of course what the dogs
do—rather it’s what they don’t do— has been taught to them, so to Gil Maison must go the plaudits. Gil has a three-foot monkey who turns into an absolute. Gargantua when Frank Buck is mentioned, a dog named Benny who never does anything he’s supposed to but smoke a cigaret, and a couple of other tiny pups who are as cute as the proverbial button and as full of tricks as a magician’s hat. Gil has an acute sense of the ridiculous which makes the act near the top of those featuring animals.
There’s a Band, Too
Of course the band plays. Such things as “I Know That You Know,” “Angry,” “Blue Skies,” “Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” “The Object of My Affections,” “St. Louis Blues,” and Pinky Tomlin’s newest composition, “I Did It and I'm Glad.” Pinky solos in some of the numbers and is featured on the guitar in “A \Porter’s Love Song to His Chambermaid” and a couple of unidentified novelty tunes. . The band also has two stars. Fran Meekin, 19-year-old accordion virtuoso, and Betty Bennett, 105 pounds of ‘“comph.” Betty sings

rehearsals, rest, etc. But don’t be confused. ‘There “Susan and God,” the sophisticated comedy by Rachel Crothers, will open next Monday night, with Katherine Meskill as Susan and the young Whitner Bissell as her dipsomaniac husband. Por those who have seen Miss Meskill’s previous two roles here, the casting should be a welcome one. Co-Producer Martin Burton admittedly has« been somewhat apologetic about putting Miss Meskill in “mother” roles, but it always turned out that necessity prompted the decision. Miss Meskill is quite fitted—by talent and also her good looks—to play a young vivacious part and now she’s to have it. The play, of course, centers - about Susan and her sudden and unaccountable conversion to a new wcult that: goes about casting off naught but sweetness and light. It is a role which calls for much exudation’ of energy in all directions; my guess being that Miss Meskill is just the person to play it. ‘When called upon, Miss Meskill can be quite profuse with enthusiasm. And thats what it takes.
Fightin' Victor
VICTOR McLAGLEN, actor, war veteran and Irishman, would like to get back in uniform. Between stage shows in New York, Fightin’ McLaglen told a reporter: “I wish they would let me go out and make up a regiment of men who are 50 or older. They'd be the best darned soldiers in the world—I'll guarantee you that. But they wouldn‘t let me do it. They say were too old.” Concerning fighting Mr. MecLaglen knows whereof he speaks,’ for he did service in the Boer War and the last World War. : If you ask me, the Government has made a tactical mistake.
Little by Little
A WEEKLY midnight show on Saturdays has been added to the RKO Palace Theater schedule in New York to meet ticket demands for “Citizen Kane” , Walter Wanger will resume movie production about June 1 after a recess of 10 months. The first picture will be “Sundown,” adapted from Barre Lyndon’s Saturday Evening Post serial of the same title. The Hollywood way—Dick Purcell signed ‘a contract with Monogram that prohibited him from flying. His role in “King of the Zombies” was that of an aviator and he spent the first two days of production flying a plane over Los Ahgeles. Watery spring weather about the country has cost 20th Century-Fox an extra $100,000 this season. .'. Kay Kyser's band returned from a 10-city tour of the Southwest with 10 new attendance records. . Anson Weeks has filed suit for $100, 000 as a result of that bus crash he was in last February in Iowa. A new musical, “Jump for Joy,” with eight new Duke Ellington tunes, is scheduled to open on the coast. this month. . “Amapola” is currently the best sheet music seller. And don’t say youre surprised! = §
