NAB AND FCC Heads Trade Charges of Interference And Monopoly.

ST. LOUIS, May 16 (U. P.).—A long and bitter fight between. the National Association ‘of Broadcasters and the Federal Communica-

tions Commission and within the,

broadcasting industry itself was

predicted here today as the NAB’s|

19th annual convention clesed following a hot exchange of charges and counter-charges by FCC Chairman James Lawrence Fly and NAB President Neville Miller. Mr. Miller replying to Mr. Fly's charges, asserted the NAB believes Government regulations is in danger of becoming “punitive and arbitrary, and we believe the people of America expect us to act when we think free= dom of radio is threatened and we believe we would be traitors to their trust if we did not do'so.” « ' - A meeting of NAB’s board of directors was called for today andy may issue a formal statement in answer ‘to Mr. Fly’s .charge that “two men run the show and-a couple of others do the chores.” Admitting that the contréversy presaged a lengthy fight with the FCC, some broadcasters expressed disappointment that there had beén no clarifying statement from the White House regarding the recent anti-monopoly report in which the , Commission ordered drastic changes in the industry. The Mutual Broadcasting System has backed the recommendations and several its directors have withdrawn the NAB as result of opposition to the report by the. National Broadcasting Company and the Columbia Broadcasting System.

Theyre (the listeners) scared but are screaming! for more. Just’ look at this fan mail. Not a sign of surrender in any of them.” But Himan Brown {is not licked— not yet.
