of defense bonds are the two ur-

savings and loan associations that are members of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. This report comes from the

eral - Savings and Loan Advisory Council which was held last week in Washington. "«The 216 member savings, building and I associations in this district have received a aly flow of funds from their savers and investors in recent years and so are in a good position to increase their volume of loans for the construction of homes,” the report says. “If necessary they can secure millions more in advance from their Home Loan Bank in Indianapolis on the security of their mortgage L assets.”

Citing the increased activity of member saving and loan associations in the district, the report |: showed that loans in the’ first quarter of 1941 totaled $13,700,000, an increase of 28 per cent over the same period a year ago. Of this; $5,300,000 was for the construction and repair of homes. In 1940 these associations made loans totaling $50,000,000 as compared with _$44,000,000 in 1939.

METAL IS NOW PHONE FIRM'S ‘CHIEF NEED

“The only thing which will keep the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. from meeting defense demands is a shortage of metals,” James F. Carroll, president, told the Indianapolis Real Estate Board yesterday. Speaking at the Washington Hotel in one of the board’s “know Indianapolis better” series, Mr. Carroll said that the number of phones in Indiana last year increased 45,000: and in the nation 950,000, an unprecedented growth. This year’s new phones over the country should total more than one and a half million, he said. The Indiana company last year spent six million dollars: in new equipment, bringing the total investment to $55,000,000. The company, he continued, has two major, problems; to furnish service to anyone on demand and

new Equipment needed to meet the increasingly heavy demand.

Savings ‘and Loans Report

CHICAGO, May 16.—More thafi $250,000,000 was lent by « the nation’s savings, building and loan associations during the first quarter this year, according to- the United States Savings and Loan League. The $267,932,000 lent from January through March was $40,000,000 more than during the same périod last. year and wa$ a record for any like period in the last six years. March, a heavy. contributor to the quarter's expanded lending business, was - the 28th successive month in. which ' the volume of loans had been grefter than the same month of the previous year. Of the March lending of $105,162,000, about 39 per cent was to help people buy existing homes. - A spectacular rise of $11,500,000 from February made its home purchase loans greater than any month’s since May of last year. ] These’ loans were in proportionately greater demand than those for home construction, which the Association attributes to the public desire to invest in: something tangible, and possibly somewhat to rising building costs.
