Rudolf Hess, second .in
line for the Hitler inheritance, was cast this week in the strangest role of a strange war, bewildering in its implications but highly
entertaining.
The sequence: 1. Germany, revealing that Hess
was missing on an airplane flight, implied maniacal suicide. + 2. A Scottish plowman captured
an unarmed parachutist who ap- |
“peared -sane, glad to be alive and eager to identify himself with pic«tures from the family album.’ 3. The Nazis switched tactics,
played ‘down the insanity angle, " suggested Hess. sought to promote a grandiose peace plan to convince the British of “the folly of ‘their * rulers.” 4. Brifairs, quoting Hess as saying “I have come to save Humanity,” speculated (a) that there was a rift in the Nazi high command and! Hess was one step ahead of the executioner; (b) that it was the most sinister trick yet conceived in Hitler's fertile- mind.

The first “true story” coming _ out of London pictured Hess as believing Hitler was invincible, .that if he could. talk personally to a “few men of good will” in England he could end the war. Wins--ton Churchill, delaying any official statement as to whether Hess was traitor, Trojan Horse or tragic illusion, stood on his earlier com-
ment: “There’s a maggot in the
apple,” » » 2
“ON - OTHER FRONTS—
Whether by coincidence or design, the battle fronts lulled while
the Hess controversy flared." During the week-end London Was bombed heavily, wrecking such famous structures as Westminster Abbey and the House of Commons. , . . German and Italian planes conducted a six-day aerial blitzkrieg on the British Mediterranean fleet but Britain reported it was a failure. . . . Indieations " grew that Germany was about to launch a thrust in Syria’ toward Iraq. . . . France, its back to the’ wall, appeared. ready to announce collaboration in Hitler's “new -order of Europe.”

JAPAN ON SPOT
Hawaii And Singapore Makes Japan Hesitate. By A. T. STEELE
Copyright. 1941. by The Indianapolis Times | Inc.
icago Daily News, HONG KONG, May 16 —~East Asia newspapers today carry splashing stories of the mass flight of 21 flying fortresses to Hawaii and the arrival of “large numbers” of British troops and quantities of American war materials in Singapore.
Nobody doubts that the deliberate publicity given these events by the British and American authorities is designed to exercise the meximum moral deterrant on Japan at a time when that country séems torn with doubts as to its future course of action, .
Speaking Their Language
It is regarded as a new and powerful attempt to discourage the Japanese from ‘entering the war on the side of the Axis through utilization.of the only diplomatic language the Japanese understand—a display of force. The spectacle of the British and Americans taking the initiative from the Japanese in the Pacific war of nerves is an unusual and puzzling one for Orientals who are impressed with-the fact that America is able to spare her great bombers for the Pacific and Britain: able
fo. spare ‘her ‘troops -for: Singapore]
despite: their mutual preoccupation with the Battle. of the Atlantic and the strain of Britain's MiddleEastern problem.
Is Japan Stalling?
Meanwhile, the Japanese wolf is doing its best ‘to impersonate a lamb, though whether she is -sincere or merely stalling is impossible to tell from this distance. It is a curious fact, however, that the Japanese official news agency, Domei, in sparing no expense in cable tolls to relay and disseminate throughout the Far East all the speeches and statements on an appeasing tone emanating from America and Britain. : " There can be no doubt that every week of Japanese hesitation makes their South Pacific problem more formidable. From this side of the Pacific there seems to be no change in the Anglo-American policy—that is doing eyerything possible to induce Japan to remain neutral but at the same time will make no more humiliating concessions even at the risk of a showdown.
KNOX SAYS HESS SANE

“two jumps ahead of a gunman” and that the No: 3 Nazi is sane. “You know I come from Chicago,” Knox told a press conference, “and out there they put the finger on you —and that’s what theyre doing to I don’t think he’s crazy.”
