POINTS NEED OF FREIGHT CARS
Ralph Budd Says Equipment Will Cost $675,000,000, Vital to Defense.
CHICAGO, May 13 (U. P.).— Ralph Budd, Commissioner of transportation for the National Defense Commission, said yesterday that 270,000 new railroad freight cars costing $675.000000 will be needed for national defense hauling! In the next two years. Mr. Budd told members of the Association of American Railways| that freight car needs are: 120,000] new cars from October, 1941, to October 1942, and 150.000 new cars from October, 1942, to October, 1943. | Mr. Budd also is president of the Burlington Railroad. The meeting! was attended by 105 executives from! 74 class one carriers. The Association called the one-| day meeting to frame an appeal for | better priority ratings for railroads under the national defense program. Col. Henry S. Henry, assistant to President J. J. Pelley of the Association, said that the net increase in new freight cars in the last two vears had been 156,000. The estimates of new car needs were based on recommendations of the Defense Commission. The new car output is pro-rated among the railroads “by informal agreement,”| according to Col. Henry. i

If you want to get a good case of poison ivy, trot out to Holliday | Park. The City grows it out there, | as one of numerous public service] features of the Park Department. | The ivy is fully identified for the protection of those who find them|selves allergic to it. The idea of raising it in the first place is to |show folks what it looks like so they {can learn to avoid it in the out- | doors. : : | At Holliday Park, however, ivy is [just a sideshow. With unheralded | persistence, the Park Department {has quietly been at work developing [the most complete botanical park in Indiana. The work is nearly finished and the park will open in June. | Every variety of bush, shrub and | tree native to Indiana grows there. Each is identified. The 80-acre tract is expected to become a mecca for nature study groups, botanists land school classes. There are rock gardens and shady spots, planted with a variety of flora. There are formal gardens {and informal gardens. There are {thousands of trees. | If you are looking about for a tree for the front lawn, you may window shop at Holliday Park. Of course, the park has been a botanical retreat for many years now, but) this year it is completely stocked. | Development has been under the] direction of Dr. Willard Clute, In-| |diana botanist. The tract was do|nated to the City by the late John 'H. Holliday and the spacious Holli- | |day residence now is used as head- | quarters for nature study groups land botanical societies.
