YOU CAN make a mental note now that the pole won't go for much less than 130 miles an hour when the boys begin making their qualifying excursions Saturday at the Speedway. Rex Mays, who has held the No. 1 position in the starting lineup three times, fears—or rather, did fear—that a 127-mile-an-hour pace for the 10 test miles would put him back in the second or third TOW. That had been his best speed in the straight-ecight Bowes Sealfast Special until late yesterday. Then, Rapid Rex clipped off four laps in a row a shade below 130 miles an hour, and the whole Bowes crew staged a mild celebration in the pits. i His best lap was made in & minute 9.3 seconds, and that's so close to 130 miles an hour nobody will argue with you if you call it that. “Boy, I feel fine now,” Rex sighed. If we do that Saturday, we should at least get a place in the front row.” After a Rex took

On these fast four laps, Mays in- |
advertently had the hand throttle out. Now he believes he'll keep it that way—it gives him more oomph on the turns. It was hard to tell whether Mays mechanician Bud Winfield was happier, Winfield had a look the sparkplugs after the run pronounced the

THE TRACK was closeq until 4 p. m. while the bump on the northeast curve was ironed out by a steamroller. This is the spot which was resurfaced during the winter and which drew complaints from several of the drivers.
»
Some of the jockeys in the pits were discussing the question of where to “ease off” on the front stretch for the southwest curve, Frank Brisko claimed that for every two pits more you pass while holding it down, you pick ap a half-mile an hour in your speed. Nobody disputed this claim.
