The State Budget Committee today allocated $5500 to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to make surveys of school facilities in defense areas. The $5500 is taken from the new $200,000 defense fund set up by the 1941 Legislature and is the second appropriation made from that fund. The Budget Committee last month allocated $15,000 for operating expenses of the new Indiana Administrative and Advisory Defense Council. Dr. C. T. Malan, Superintendent of Public Instruction, said that he intended to use the money to employ a specialist in making surveys
hasn't been determined. They have challengea the Lieutenant Gove ernor’s right to share appointments with the Governor in three court cases now on file. There's a slight chance the whole problem might be settled by July 1 through an Indiana Supreme Court decision. If it isn’t, further court action may be filed to cover this
situation.

County Liquor Boards
COUNTY LIQUOR boards which began functioning under the new law on May 1 have ine
creased powers, but not the abso« lute authority claimed in some reports, according to the latest interpretation. The only additional power given them, these sources say. occurs when three or all four members vote against the granting of a license. In that case and in that case only is the State Commission stopped from issuing it, they say. For instance, if a local board votes either by a majority or unanimous vote to grant a permit, the State Commission still has the power to deny it. And if there is a tie vote in the local board, the final word to grant or deny is up to the Commission.

The medals were presented, never- | theless, by the company at a dinner last night in the Hotel Severin for those who had charge of train No. 301, westbound near Solsberry March 26. At that time, Engineer C. S. Clayton, Indianapolis, saw the roof of the home of Irwin Ray, former sheriff of Greene County, ablaze. He recalled that there was ne fire fighting equipment within effective range, stopped the train and turned out the crew consisting of G. H. Dean, fireman; J. F. Pearce, brakeman; J. H.
