Michigan Retains Big Ten Lead
Times Special CHICAGO, Ill, May 8—Michigan
led the Big Ten baseball field today and like all good ball clubs owed its position to effective pitching and
power at the plate. With four straight victories to its credit the Wolverine nine reflected its position in statistical standings as well as the numerical one. At the half way mark, Michigan led the Conference in hitting and fielding, have the individual batting leader and two top hurlers. The third-place Illinois club will challenge the Wolverines on their home grounds this week in an attempt to capture the title they shared last year. Northwestern with three wins and one loss plays Purdue Friday and Saturday. Indiana's powerful fourth-place squad takes on Ohio State at home and Minnesota, after a slow start, goes to Wisconsin. Iowa meets Chicago twice. Michigan's team batting average of .329 is but one point above Wisconsin, idle last week, but its fielding mark of 968 leads the league easily.
Women Down
Golf Leaders
MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 8 (U. P.).
medalist and defending champion out of the Southern Women’s Golf Tournament in second round match play clashed on the Memphis Country Club course today as word went out to “watch Louise Suggs,” power-ful-driving youngster from Lithia Springs, Ga., who smacks a ball 250 yards at will, By a quirk of the draw, Mrs. Mark McGarry, of St. Petersburg, and Mrs. Sam Israel, of New Orleans, were paired in the first match of the quarter-finals. Yesterday Mrs. McGarry, 1936 champion, eliminated Atlanta’s strongly-favored Dorothy Kirby, medalist, 3 and 2. Mrs. Israel a few minutes earlier piled up one of the most decisive scores of the day in downing defending champion Mrs. Frank Goldthwaite, of Fort Worth, 5 and 4. Miss Suggs, playing in her first Southern, teed off in the last match of the quarter-finals with Mrs. Chatham Hunter, of Memphis, and the dopesters were saying that the 17-year-old Georgia State champion probably would lead from the outset. Yesterday Miss Suggs beat Jane
Cothran, of Greenville, S. C, 1 up, while Mrs. Hunter eliminated Mrs. Leon Solomon, of Memphis, 2 and 1. If Miss Suggs defeats Mrs. Hunter today she likely will meet Mrs. Estelle Lawson Page, of Chapel Hill, N. C, in the semi-finals. Both are in the same bracket. A match with Mrs. Page would be a supreme test for the steady little Lithia Springs swatter, for Mrs. Page was established as a strong contender when Miss Kirby fell.
Mioland Loses
Dixie Handicap
BALTIMORE, Md., May 8 (U. P). Instead of boosting his 1941 earnings over $10000, C. S. Howard's Mioland was forced to be content with $94770 today as Marland toasted Woodvale Farm's Haltal as the 37th winner of Pimlico’s $20,000 added Dixie Handicap. Mioland was supposed to win the Dixie but Haltal actually won it. The Howard horse, backed down to an odds-on position on the mutuel board, ran into trouble five times around the mile and threesixteenths course and Haltal made good a stretch drive by a slim head at the end.
Ring Master
NEW YORK, May 8 (NEA)— Pitcher Paul Derringer wears the largest sized ring of all the Cincinnati Reds who received rings emblematic of 1940 world baseball championship.
