REP. JOHNSON HITS SPENDING
Hoosier Says Government Hasn’t Begun to Save ‘First Million.
Times Special WASHINGTON, May %7.—Rep.| Noble J. Johnson (R. Ind.) is a new|
member of the House Appropria-| tions Committee, but he reported | today that he is learning rapidly. | "One of the things I have learned,” the Terre Haute Congress- | man declared, “is that while Secre-| tary of Treasury Morgenthau sug-| gested that we should save a billion, | the Administration thus far hasn't] even begun to work on saving its| first million.” | Rep. Johnson curious case. | “There is a statue of Chief Jus-| tice John Marshall in front of the] Capitol building which nobody ever) sees, according to the Superintend- | ent of Buildings and Grounds.
Urges $28,000 Saving
“So the Administration asks $3000 to move it over to the new Supreme | Court Building, which is quite appropriate. But in addition, they ask| a $25,000 appropriation to buy a statue of Washington which some- | body made over in New York and they want to put that where the | Marshall statue now stands. “It just seems to me that there is $28,000 which could be saved for some time.” Rep. Johnson reported that he is looking into the case of a girl employed in one of the downtown de- | partments who allegedly was told by her boss to “let the work pile up so that two clerks could be hired to do| it and she would get a $200 raise besides.” | “While most of the departments | point out that their figures are be-| low the budget estimates, they don’t add that they all are above the current appropriations. We can never save a million, let alone a billion, that way,” Rep. Johnson concluded.
