Be Most Experts Now Admit \Y | Planes Hold Balance of European Influence.
By MAJ. AL WILLIAMS Times Aviation Editor PITTSBURGH, May 6.—Almost | every expert, real or ersatz, has now made this statement or its equivaNN lent: “Airpower holds the balance {of European influence.” A year ago {this opinion was tagged as radical and fantastic. Its general acceptance today is evidence of the startled awakening of a reactionary world. x = =
| Study Gun Mounting
ONE OF the most interesting ex- | perimental projects in aeronautics is the wind-tunnel research to determine how to mount guns in the |leading edges of fast airplanes] without causing loss of flight speed | and increased landing speed. | The entering edge of a wing is its when |most critical area. Any dis-
{file affects the wing's effciency. For (instance, eight guns protruding
ing plane's wings cut about eight miles an hour from its maximum flight speed and add about three miles an hour to its landing speed. |

TOKYO, May 6 (U.P.).—A disastrous earthquake shook northern Manchuria early today, a dispatch of the Domei News Agency and extensive casualties were feared. The Domei dispatch, sent from Harbin, reported that the quake occurred at 12:18 a. m, (10:18 p. m. Monday, Indianapolis Time). According to Domei, the first report of specific casualties was from Suihwa, north of Harbin, where 25 persons were killed when a brick factory of the South Manchuria Railroad collapsed. Reports were arriving, it was added, that scores were killed and {hundreds injured in other towns.

WASHINGTON, May 8 (U. P) — The American Federation of Labor said today that anti-strike legislation recently adopted by the Texas State Legislature is an “invasion of the rights and liberties of workers” and should be declared unconstitutional.

damage, even of great extent, is| not nearly as much a problem for | ground salvage crews as that done | by a multitude of widely scattered | | small bombs, such as a medium | sized bomber can carry. ! This is another indication of the | compelling consideration which | forces airpower to play its own game. A hit-and-run war necessi|tates small units and many of | them—small planes and small bombs, Big planes do not fit effi{ciently into the high-speed. high- | maneuverability features of true { hit-and-run warfare.

Night Raids Less Costly
THE REAL reason why night bombardment is area bombing,| | with only incidental chance of hit-| | ting military targets, is that the {bombers cannot see their targets, ‘and hence work against whole cit-| (ies. This is also the reason why] | night bombing is so much less| costly in casualties to the offensive. Spring weather, with clear night! | skies and moonlight, will account [for a rapid increase in the number { of bombers lost to anti-aircraft and (the gunfire of defensive air units. | It is a matter of record that the] { British—and it is safe to assume! |that the Germans are similarly af- | | fected—are losing more aircraft on! | the return to blacked-out landing | {fields than from enemy anti-air-| craft and enemy plane gunfire. |Camouflaged airdromes are hard enough to spot in daytime. At night the job is far more difficult, especially when there is fear of enemy craft poised aloft.
Short of Propellers
I BELIEVE there's more truth than rumor in the story that after aircraft for shipment abroad are flown across the American continent, their propellers are removed and shipped back to the West Coast to be installed on other planes. The |shortage of accessories—props, gen|erators, magnetoes, and other gear— |is critical.
Simple Designs Best
WARPLANES with retractable landing gear are having a tough time in the sandy desert country along the African coastline. Many fliers no longer try to use it. Sand in the sliding members of the retractable gear hampers operation. Moral: The farther from home you intend to operate an aircraft, the! simpler must be the design of that! plane, its engine and accessories. |
DENY THYMUS GLAND | AIDS HUMAN GROWTH
BERKELEY, Cal, May 6 (U. P). —University of California research- | ers reported today that normal body {growth apparently is not affected |by the thymus gland. The thymus, a gland at the base] {of the throat, long has puzzled sci-| lence. It was believed to be the me-| diator of the potent growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland, and| to affect development of sex organs. | The researchers said, however, that] experiments on rats whose thymus| glands had been removed indicated |
the gland has no affect on growth.
