A good way to tell if the Lyric has a hit show is to consult the show time schedule on this page. Ordinarily the Lyric plays four stage shows on Priday, switching to five on Saturday and Sunday, then dropping back to four for the remainder of the week. Just how many is decided by manager Bill McIlwain. [He can scent a hit show even before lit starts oh tour. For those of you who just want to know how good the Eddy Duchin [show is, take a look at that schedule. Five shows vesterday, five to(day, five tomorrow, five Monday, [From Tuesday on, it's still not decided. Now, for the folks who like to know the particulars: The hour-long Duchin presentation is crammed with bubbling ahd flowing melody, eight of the most beautiful lovelies these astigmatic eyes ever have seen, |and some silliness by the Noncha[lants which pains the midrift.
Duchin at the Piano
Mr. Duchin, of course, is featured at the keyboard, his rippling fingers bouncing along in the band's numbers and then soloing ih a medley {of “All The Things You Are,” “Why Do I Love You,” and Indiana's unofficial state song, “Star Dust.” The orchestral tunes are of the same cloth, velvety smooth “Intermezzo” (with Johnny Drake's deep

THAT QUESTION MARK in the title of Deanna Durbin's “Nice Girl?” ‘was an afterthought by a studio executive who was torn assunder by the question: How should little Deanna be advised on what every young girl should know. It ‘was both a notation of ¢aution and one of the neatest trial balloons to be sent aloft to test the box-office breezes. Not one moviegoer in 100 could keep from wondering at what such a title hinted. However, let it be noted that Deanna’s coming of age is carried off in the movie with finesse and morrow. Circle's Film Has 4 Stars
Marlene Dietrich Is ‘the ‘Flame of New Orleans.’
When you bring together ih a comedy Roland Young, Laura Hope Crews and Mischa Auer, ‘dear friends, you have a comedy. Wheh you add Marlene Dietrich, you have also a spectacle. This is “Flame of New Orleans,” which ‘opened yesterday at ‘the ‘Circle Theater, and a very good and funhy movie it is, t00. Miss Dietrich is ‘excellent, Although the movie is set in early New Orleans ‘years, ‘when women customarily wore great sheaves of floor length ‘petticoats, Miss Dietrich heroically and ingeniously manages to show her limbs three separate times during the picture and that in itself ‘is a technical triumph. ‘Also, it's good theater. Bruce Cabot plays one of the tale leads and his scenes with Young are among the funniest ih the picture. Mr. Auer is a Russian ‘who is worse ‘thah Harpo Marx ‘abotit blonds, but his accented explanation of ‘why it would be foolish for him and Mr. Young to fight a duel could stand alone as ‘a short subject and beat most ‘of them at their ‘own game, For Andy Andy Devine. There's ho use saying what he ‘does. He's like olives: you ‘either ‘do ‘or ‘don't learn to like him. As the title indicates, ‘the picture portrays early New ‘Orleans social life. Taura Hope Orews is Mr. Young's aunt and social pilot ‘of the wealthy, banker family, She is apparently stone ‘deaf, bit has an almost ‘insatiable ‘appetite for ‘the opera. Also she ‘confributes a ‘prize sequence when she gives last minute intimate advice to Miss Dietrich just before the ‘ceremony that was to wed her to Mr. Young, The other end of the double-headd= er is Joan Blondell and Dick Powell (mah and wife inh real life) ‘ih “Model Wife.” Miss Blondell, in the ‘picture, is ‘not a ‘model wife. We understand she is ih real life. —J. OC.
HOW TO ASSEMBLE a column or, oh, how that ‘mail ‘piles up. Joel McCrea has replaced James Craig in the forthcoming “Valley of the Sun,” which was to have béen known as “Sun Valley.” That's the picture, you know, in which Sonja Henie ‘will star, supported by Glenn Miller's band. You remember Sonja, don’t you? After the first few renearsals, Director Leopold Stokowski said the 1941 all-American Youth Orchestra is better than last year's. “They are quick to learn and quicker to ‘pick up the trend ‘of the numbers we are rehearsing,” said the maestro. Repeating the 18cal Stokowski date: June 10, Butler Bowl. . .. Bomar Cramer, Thdianapolis concert pianist and teacher, will summer in Denver and mean- | time engage in some technical study with the Lhevinnes, “That Hamilton Woman,” starring Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh and at present doing oodles of business in Los Angeles, Miami Beach and New York, comes here to Loew's on the 16th . .. the Four Ink Spots, here for a Sunday night engagement at the Indiana Roof, will be interviewed tonight via WFBM sometime between midnight and 1 a. m, on the records program. But they can’t play. Union says nix, But the station plans to play a couple of their “ebony platters,” Which, however, is undecided. The station has only two Ink Spots records (tut! tut!) and they might not be satistactory with the boys. It may be the Spots will have to bring their ‘own. Incidentally, the Ink boys made their movie debut Thursday when “The ‘Great American Broadcast,” with Alice Faye, opened in New York.
read up on Hindu philosophy, here it is: He's living quietly ih Hollywood with his mother and sister. Talk of returning to pictures reportedly makes him shudder -, . Also among the movieland where-has-he-beens is Johnny Weissmuller, but he'll be back soon in another Tarzan epic.
n » 5 Nolan Gets His'n
LLOYD NOLAN, who left Paramount two years ago because they wouldn't let him be anything but a gangster, is back at the ‘studio. He's been assigned to play the part of a gangster . . . Walt (“Pantasia’) Disney's next will ‘be “The Reluctant Dragon.” The story is laid within the Disney studio itself and Robert Benchley is fentured as a bewildered studio visitor, Mr, Benchley’s adventures take hith through the sound effects department where actual ‘work is going oh for “Dumbo,” full-length circus feature to be released next summer, and onto ‘one of the scenes from “Bambi,” now in the process of being shot. And Mr, Benchley also meets up with Donald Duck at ‘work ih “MeDonald’s Farm,” ‘one ‘of next year's short productions. Th other words, “Relnctant Dragon” lets you ‘ih ‘on | how Mr. Disney is getting along with his ‘work. Neat, eh?
Cary ‘Grant was going to play the movie “Mah Who ‘Came to Dinner” for $1 and the rest to go to the British. Nice gesture, but it turns ‘out now Mr. Grant was elimihatéd. Whereupon, Metro asked Orson Welles if he'd like the part. He ‘wouldn't, Next overture was made to Robert Benchley, but there's no answer as vet .. , Olsen, of ‘Olsen, ‘Johnson and ‘‘Hellzapoppin,” ‘is ‘expected th Ft. Wayne next week to visit his aged mother and ‘multiple relatives. First, though, is the Derby today. If Porter's ‘Cap ‘isn't the ‘winner, maybe that's the reason. Jinxed by a 160ny.

WARPY WATERFALL and his crack student band out of 1. U. have joined forces with Deacon Moore, and for the summer, at least, it'll be “Deacon Moore's Or-
chestra, with Warpy Waterfall” Warpy being musical director. On the Deacon's itinerary is Buckeye Lake, 'O., and with a WLW line . . Talk that Ayres DLamarr's band would be taken over by Wingy Manone, the Dixieland cornet man, is on the wane,
Biggest jive news now is that Madison Square Garden will be opened May 30 as a nightclub covering acres. Music will be by some guy ‘called B, Goodman . . .
