FUNGICIDES AID SPOTTY LAWNS
|
Chemicals Available for Elimination of Ordinary Grass Diseases.
Dead or discolored lawn areas
tributed to weather conditions now are known to be caused by parasitic “fungi” or molds. To keep the turf free from these diseases. careful daily observations plus protective applications of fungicides are necessary. Among the more common diseases are brown patch, pythium, the leaf spot of bluegrass, ring spot, dollar spot and | zonate eyespot. Chemicals of various types, chiefly based on mercury compounds, are available to control these diseases. They may be applied either as a liquid or dry with compost but spraying is the most efficient methTo prevent or control brown patch and dollar spot, fungicide should be applied at the rate of three ounces to 1000 square feet. Mix Fungicides Well The first application should be made just before the brown patch appears. This should be followed by other applications at one to two week intervals. In applying fungicides with compost, the fungicide must be thoroughly mixed. It must be distributed uniformly over the turf and the grass watered lightly afterward. Brown patch is more severe during rainy or sultry summer periods. It appears suddenly, discolored areas ranging in size from very small spots to patches of several | feet in diameter. A darkening ring or “smoke-screen” frequently will be found around the borders of new brown patci spots. The grass hppears scalded or smoked with a amp. Occurs Any Time
Dollar spot may occur at almost |any time during the growing season.
{patch, and also earlier and later in the season. It appears in more or less clearly defined spots of varying size seldom exceeding the diameter of a silver dollar. The grass dies and as it
| withers it turns a bleached. brown
color, giving the turf a moth-eaten aphearance. Unlike brown patch, the dollar
| spots do not grow in size but mul(tiply in number sometimes becom{IN numerous enough to destroy
largé areas. Pythium Red Shaded
Pythium is named for the fungus causing the disease, To become active, it needs exceptionally high temperatures and plenty of moisture. Pythium often is confused with brown patch, but may be distinguished by its redder shade of brown, It generally kills every blade of grass in the infected area, while in the brown patch spots a portion of the blades usually escape uninjured. Pythium spots seldom form the perfect circles of brown patch, but are irregular and in some cases smeared. They spread more rapidly than brown patch and ft sequently appear to follow the course of the water over the turf. It is thought that water distributes the spores.

Designed by S. E. Becker, architect, and built by A. H. Siersbeck, the unusually trim home at 6525 Broadway is simple but not plain, utterly convenient without frills or gingerbread. A series of stepping stones leads to the entrance which opens into a roomy vestibule with a coat closet of more than usual size. Through an archway to the south is the living room while on the north and shielded by a door is a hall, the edrooms and bath. A well-proportioned wood mantel is centered over the fireplace in the north wall. A clever and handy arrangement is a small archway for the telephone which may be reached from any place in the house without traveling through other rooms. A medium-sized dining room is
END LIMITATIONS ON PAINTING SCHEME
Contrary to widespread belief, homes featuring siding of asbestoscement composition are no longer limited as to decorative possibilities; now asbestos shingles and clapboards are being effectively styled with paint. ) Paint likewise seals asbestos siding against moisture absorption, which may well result in cracking by freezing. Painting follows the identical procedure familiar on concrete and stucco. The priming coat must penetrate the porosity of the composition boards, yet have adequate pigment content to form a firm foundation for the topcoats to follow. The primer proving effective is prepared from three parts (by volume) soft paste white lead and five parts of an equal mixture of raw
reducing oil.
