CHICAGO. May 2—Much as I hate bare-faced enthusiasm, exceptions are in order for “Citizen Kane.”
Movie maulers from the Middle in here yesterday morning to see cinematic debut and the picture Studio Theater was like nothing in Kane,” for a mouse. Several already have brazenly they ever saw. I wouldn't go that pictures I ever saw. And besides, the quality of the previous meal often has much to do with the enjoyment of a show—all rule books for reviewers to the contrary. “Citizen Kane” is, however, as good a movie as I'd ever ask for. When Orson Welles flew to Hollywood, with those radio Men from Mars on his heels, the experts there received him with long chips on their shoulders. Here was a young smart alec (now 25), they said, who wouldn't take any lip from anybody. That's right. . He wouldn't, he didn’t and he probably won't now. What gives the tale fictional ring is that Orson came through The Wonder Boy (one wag

this: Charles Foster Kane, famous publisher and art collector, dies in the first scene. As he emits his last gasp in the fabulous Xanada estate in Florida, there falls from his hand one of those glass-ball snow storms, with the words, “Rose Bud,” written in it, Upon these two words, also the last spoken by Kane, hangs a lot of the narrative. Next scene: The screening room of a film company, obviously the March of Time. The record of Kane's life has just been unreeled. Though complete in general, the film fails to satisfy the editor. He wants tc know what “Rose Bud” really meant in Kane's life. And so he assigns a reporter to find out. The reporter goes to the men and women who were closest to Kane and as each tells his story, one is taken back to the time being recounted. The recounting takes 115 sets, almost twice the number of an ordinary picture: For his cameraman, Mr. Welles chose Gregg Toland, who already had a starry record that included “Grapes of Wrath,” “The Long Voyage Home” and “Dead End.” By sparing use of closeups, one is made to feel that he is himself looking in on a scene, rather than being shown one. In fact, the camera plays just as important a role as any of the cast. When you see “Citizen Kane,™ very likely you will at first overlook the acting when first poring over the picture in your after-the-theater evaluation. One is not conscious of acting. Particular scenes stand out mostly because of their native high-power drama. One quick shot may set the theme for a whole section of the story. For instance, when Susan, Kane's pitiful protege, makes her “operatic” debut, the camera climbs up the flies and spots a couple of stagehands—one holding his nose. It is a cutting and graphic way of showing you how Susan sings. When Kane is in the midst of a fiery oration to win the governor’s chair, outlining the program he will effect when elected, his small son turns to the first Mrs. Kane and asks: “Mummy, is daddy governor vet.” No, and it’s clear then that he never will be. Such is the poignant, lucid way of Mr. Welles. =
Is I+ Hearst? SOME SELF - APPOINTED prophets have confided to the public that “Citizen Kane” will | not be good box office because not everybody knows the life of William Randolph Hearst, the publisher, Which brings us around to: Is Charles Foster Kane a portrayal of William Randolph Hearst? The answer, Mr. Welles’ protestations to the contrary, is yes. What is told of Mr. Hearst's life, however, is nothing more than you could find in your Carnegie Library. And the telling is so well knit, that you don't need to be an authority on Mr. Hearst to know Mr. Kane. Mr. Kane can be taken as a symbol of a turbulent, graspink era. Or he can be taken as a Daniel Boohe in motion picture entertainment. The idea is, picture. Get it?
