REFUGEES SENT T0 NORTH AFRICA

Food Shortage Causes Move, Embassy Says: Denies Ship Cession.

WASHINGTON, May 1 (U. P).— The French Embassy has announced that because of the acute food shortage in France, some refugees in that country have been transferred to North Africa where the food situation is better. The Embassy denied, however, that France has handed over any refugees to Spanish authorities, or| would do so in the future, other than those who may come before the courts under customary legal procedure for offenses against the common law, At the same time the Embassy denied reports that France recently handed over to Germany a number of important French ships. In a formal statement, it said: “The French Embassy is in a position to declare that no such cession of ships has taken place, most of the ships mentioned in the news having been seized by the Germans at the time of the invasion of, France. For instance the De Grasse was seized in June, 1940, by the Germans in Bordeaux; the Kerguelen and the Yangtse met the same fate at the same time. Concerning three other ships, Mexique, Vendee and Fiandre, no cession to nor seizure by the Germans could have been made for the following reasons: The Mexique was sunk by a mine on June 19, 1940, in the Estuary of the Gironde; the Vendee, which ran aground by accident in February, 1940, at the mouth of the Loire, has been refloated by the German authorities] in the occupied area; the Flandre was sunk in Bordeaux in September, 1940, by R. A. F. bombardments.”

NAZIS WILL LOSE]

Angered by Bomb Ruins; Rushes Ship Building | Along Clyde. |

CLYDEBANK, Scotland, May 1, (U. P).—Thousands of men are| building ships along the Clyde. Huge | cranes are lifting gréat plates of} steel and riveting machines set up| a deafening din. And only a short] distance away is what remains of “the Hill.” | “The Hill” is where thousands of these workers used to live, This| correspondent walked through eight blocks of it through which no| vehicle could possibly make its way. | There were only ruined homes and buildings. Nothing was intact. i The correspondent found a former | resident of “the Hill,” George An-| drews, a man of 70, who, with his| wife, saved for 45 years to build “a; comfortable home for our children and our old age” He had worked | in the shipyards from the time he] was a boy.

Loses Entire Savings

“Three months ago I retired with| my savings,” he said, “then one] night they bombed us—you know all | about the blitzing we got. Now I| have nothing.” ! “If the bombing goes on there'll | be nothing left,” the correspondent prompted him. ‘Ave, but it's going to go on. There'll be no quitting around here | until Hitler's got his.” The correspondent asked if this, the Glasgow District, hadn't been a center of radical labor movements and also of pacifism. “Naw,” he said, “we only wants our rights, and there won't be any pacifism around here till this bloody show is over. You don't think we'd) let them just walk right in and help themselves?”
